Events Manager Position

General Position Overview:
Lynch’s Landing Foundation is seeking a full‐time Events Manager to plan and execute successful events in Downtown Lynchburg, including street festivals, park festivals, merchant events, and businesses networking events. The Events Manager will also assist with Lynch’s Landing marketing efforts, including event marketing, downtown promotion, social media, graphic design, advertising, website management, etc. The Events Manager will also be responsible for volunteer recruitment and retention. This position will report to the Executive Director.

The Events Manager may also be called upon by the Executive Director to manage special projects or assist with other operational needs.

Required Skills and Abilities

• Highly organized with very effective time management skills
• Extremely attentive to detail
• Must be highly motivated and a collaborative team player
• Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
• Proficient with MS Office Products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
• Ability to supervise and manage project teams and volunteers
• Ability to work flexible hours (evenings and weekends)
• Ability to work independently and to manage multiple projects simultaneously

Preferred Required Skills and Abilities

• Experience with the Adobe Creative Suite
• Experience with email marketing, specifically MailChimp
• Experience with WordPress
• Valid driver’s license, personal transportation

Experience and Education Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from a four‐year institution
• Proven ability to plan and execute successful events from start to finish
• 1 – 3 years related experience

Where should I park?

With over 10,000 people coming to downtown, it's a good idea to stake out your parking situation in advance. We have secured eight public parking lots and three private parking lots for your convenience. Please see map above for parking lot locations. Alternatively, avoid the downtown traffic entirely by parking in one of our two remote parking lots! GLTC will be providing a continuously running shuttle from two off-site lots starting from 5:30pm and ending at 9:30pm.

Park your car at the City of Lynchburg lot located next to the old James River Conference Center and ride the shuttle to and from Monument Terrace in downtown Lynchburg.

WHERE DID ALL THE FOOD GO?

Don't worry, we've got lots of food! But this year, you will find most of the food vendors on the side streets to help with traffic flow. As you walk down Main Street, look up the side streets and you will see all of your favorites. 

where can i sit and eat?

The Lynchburg Community Market is your best bet. They will have some picnic tables, as well as some standing tables where their farmstands are traditionally located. 

IS THIS EVENT FAMILY-FRIENDLY?

Heck yes! We are providing lots of kids' activities this year, including the Way Crunchy Kids' Zone! Located in the Lynchburg Community Market plaza, the Kids Zone will have all kinds of hands-on fun:

• There will be plenty of free fun for kids: an art area, carnival games with prizes, hula hoops, a reading area, and baby pools full of dry corn (sensory bin/sand box). There will even be a mermaid! Plus, thanks to Enchanting Entertainment, kids can get close to superheros and princesses..
• A buddy band station will be provided to attach important info to your child to keep them safe in the crowd.
• The Way Crunchy Store will be in full effect with souvenirs, vintage children's clothing, and other goodies available for purchase. 
• The Way Crunchy Zone will also feature a "Breastfeeding Oasis" sponsored by F. Read Hopkins Pediatrics with a place for Mothers to grab a seat to feed their babies in a quite place. 

What is there to do after the event?

Lots! There are post-festival events and activities at The Glass House, RA Bistro, Yoga Goodness, the Academy Center of the Arts, Favored Flavors and Terrace View at the Bank of the James! Check out the details on the Get Downtown 2016 website.

can i bring my super-friendly dog/cat/bird/llama?

No. While we love pets as much as you do, an event this size is simply not pet-friendly. Our number one goal is to provide a safe environment for all festival-goers, and mixing animals with other animals, a large crowd, and small children, would make that difficult. If you bring an animal you will be asked to leave or wait outside the event. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding. 

CAN I COME AND SET UP A TABLE AT THE EVENT?

No. We stopped accepting vendor applications in August. If you would like to participate in next year's festival, please make sure to submit an application when they open in May 2017.

Kids of all ages will find something to engage their curiosity on four floors of interactive, colorful exhibits that combine movement and play with history, science, music, and more. Pretend to be an architect and draft a building in the “office” or explore the James River with a running replica complete with working dams and canoes.

2) Get Up Close and Personal with Nature on Percival’s Island.  

If bugs, fish, and other wildlife fascinate your kids, take them for an adventure on Percival’s Island, which can be accessed from the corner of Washington Street and Concord Turnpike. Practice reading maps at the trail information display, take some family photos at the LOVE sign, and get ready to explore. Take the RiverWalk Trail which is paved and spans the whole island, or go off the grid and explore the many hidden foot trails. With two large walking bridges spanning the river at different points, you’ll have great views of both the city and the wooded areas. Everyone will enjoy the quiet sanctuary of the woods whether walking or biking.

3) Go Back in Time at the Lynchburg Museum 

Perched at the top of Monument Terrace, the Lynchburg Museum is a great activity for middle-aged and older children who are learning an appreciation and sense of place. Downtown Lynchburg boasts centuries of history and much of it is carefully housed in our old courthouse where curated exhibits reveal what life was like for those who built Lynchburg. Discovery is the name of the game, so after your visit, spark conversation by asking what each child found interesting and memorable. You may be surprised at what stood out to them!

Bust out your walking shoes and join the Lynchburg Visitor Center’s resident Civil War historian, Judy Harvey, for a walking tour of Downtown Lynchburg. Lynch's Landing Hires New Executive Director

Ashley Kershner has been named the new executive director of Lynch’s Landing.

For the past three years, Kershner has led the marketing, branding and development efforts for Lynchburg Parks and Recreation. During that time, she launched the popular events "Food Truck Thursdays" and "Movies in the Park," and secured $81,000 in federal grant funding for the Lynchburg Community Market.

"Ashley’s background and experience makes her an ideal candidate to lead our organization in accomplishing our　mission to promote a vibrant and engaging downtown," says Linda Jones, Board President of Lynch’s Landing. "Ashley and our Board are dedicated to further establishing our downtown as a favorite destination for residents and visitors alike."

Kershner also lead the grassroots component of the Academy Historic Theatre’s Matching Challenge Campaign, an effort that raised more than $750,000 in 90 days. She also has served as vice president of the Young Professionals of Central Virginia, communications director and box office manager for Endstation Theatre Company, and a food writer for The Burg and Lynchburg Living Magazine.

Kershner will start her work with Lynch's Landing on Monday, April 25.

This upcoming First Friday, April 1st, 2016 is the launch of “ART ON MAIN”, showing art in vacant buildings on Main Street in Lynchburg between the 700 and 1300 Block.

An open (to the public) reception with artists and members of the Arts Council will be held on First Friday, April 1 at 1300 Main Street, future home of the Grassroots Local Market.

The concept of art in vacant buildings is not new; it’s been done before, like Syracuse NY and St. Louis, MO. The benefit of art in vacant windows is proven to be effective in ...various aspects:
Art in windows provides the visitor a feeling of security and creates an aesthetic focal point in an otherwise unsightly abandoned building.
“A vacant building creates a mental “end of street” for the visitor, and they often turn around, leaving the next business just beyond the vacant one without a potential sale. But occupying the vacant building with art or an aesthetic focal point changes the “end of street” to somewhere else; says Jason St. Clair, Board Member of the JRCAH and manager of this project, “simply put, the art helps create a bridge from one store to another.

Additionally, attention is not placed on the artist’s work that cannot otherwise be promoted. Property owners struggling to lease their building get more eyes on their building, which could potentially lead to a quicker time to lease.

Winter Lights is a project to create vibrant, temporary public art that illuminates the Bluffwalk in mid-to-late winter, attracting visitors to visit downtown by car or on foot from the hour of dusk, 4 PM, until 10 PM each night for four weeks running from February’s First Friday, Feb 5, through the March First Friday, March 5.

Winter Lights on the Bluffwalk in Downtown

Join us for WINTERLIGHTS 2016

Winter Lights 2016 is a FREE outdoor exhibit of light-based art along the Bluffwalk developed by the JRCAH in partnership with AEP and the City of Lynchburg, to be launched on the First Friday in February 2016.
Winterlights will illuminate the Bluffwalk, through light based installations designed by artists. This event is providing an opportunity for Lynchburg’s citizens to engage with unique art and experience downtown in a new and unexpected ...way. It will delight all ages and invite to take a stroll along the Bluffwalk.

With the use of recycled holiday lighting, artists, individuals and groups are invited to create vibrant illumination art , which displayed along the Bluffwalk during the month of February, attracting audiences to Downtown during a rather dormant period.
“Inspired by similar projects (Inlight Richmond, Zoolights at the National Zoo, the Baltimore Zoo) the installation will attract and delight a wide demographic of all ages.” According to David Neumeyer, Vice-President of the James River Council for the Arts & Humanities.

Open call for artists, individuals and groups:
Deadline for design submissions is December 15th
Prizes totaling $1000 will be awarded for best designs in two categories. First, second and third prize will be awarded from a panel of judges and by popular voting.

Opening night (First Friday in February, weather permitting) will include a ceremony with music, entertainment and food trucks offering warm beverages..
Mid-month, at a secondary event, cash prizes will be awarded to the best three illuminated designs, chosen by a panel of judges and separately by popular voting through social media and newspaper.

The installations will illuminate from the hour of dusk, 4 PM, until 10 PM each night for four weeks running from February’s First Friday, Feb 5, through the March First Friday, March 5.

Artful Bicycle Racks Installation Ceremony

Four “Artful Bike Racks” have recently been installed in locations around Downtown Lynchburg, an area designated as the James River Arts & Cultural District. An installation and ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the project will take place on Thursday, September 24, 2015 at 1:30 p.m. at the 10th Street Entrance to City Hall.
The creation of creative, colorful bike racks was led by the James River Council for the Arts and Humanities (JRCAH) in order to contribute to the attractiveness of the downtown area and provide functional bicycle parking to serve residents living, working and visiting downtown businesses. The bike racks provide aesthetic points of interest, support increased bicycle u...se for short trips and liberate parking spaces for visitors from longer distances to access downtown businesses. The project complements the full range of beautification projects that have taken place in Downtown Lynchburg ad the City’s investment in trails and bike lanes.

More than 30 designs were submitted to the public Artful Bike Rack competition in Fall of 2014. By spring of 2015, the four winning designs selected had been created by Philip Gabathuler, Davy Hazelgrove, Matt Perkins and John Wilson.

One of the artful bike racks was fabricated at no cost by AREVA (Mt Athos division), while the remaining three were commissioned to local artist Paul Clements, who also produced the public LOVE statue downtown.

Bike racks are located at the Bank of the James plaza, the Community Market, City Hall and on the corner of 5th Street and Madison.

“The arts, including public art play a vital role in stimulating society and developing vital communities”, said Kim Soerensen, president of the James River Council. “They lift our quality of life, have a crucial impact on our economy, foster creativity, heighten our cultural intelligence and deepen our collective sense of humanity. We hope the Artful Bike Racks will stimulate our community in being active and riding bikes while delighting all with unique public art”.

An arts-oriented, bike-friendly City creates a vibrant community with positive effects on business development and social and physical connectivity,” said Marjette Upshur, director of economic development for the City of Lynchburg. “The James River Arts & Culture District program is proud to support projects like this that advance both the arts and economic development.”

Development of the Artful Bike Rack project was made possible through numerous partnerships:

• Lynchburg’s Office of Economic Development facilitated a grant from the James River Arts & Cultural District Program.
• Lynchburg departments of Community Development and Public Works contributed staff time towards location and installation services
• AREVA and its staff, David Roberts and Scott Evans, provided material and fabrication services for one of the racks
• RIDE Solutions contributed funds for the fabrication of racks and provided staff project assistance
• The James River council for the Arts & Humanities contributed funds for the fabrication of racks and provided project leadership.

Lynch's Landing presents the Seventh Annual Get! Downtown Street Festival on September 11th!

On Friday, September 11th from 6-9PM, Main Street will be closed from intersections of 13th Street to 7th Street, welcoming over 10,000 festival goers to the 2015 Get! Downtown Street Festival. As the largest street festival in Lynchburg, Get!Downtown will once again welcome six blocks of downtown businesses, and vendors, artists, crafters, live music and performance on three stages, dancers and street performers, and taste local cuisine all along Main Street.

This year boasts musical performances on each of the three stages with a line up of the MG Experience and DJ Ed at the Community Market Stage; Exodus and Alma Hesson at the 7th Street stage, and WhoaBear, Mystic Alpacas, Blackout, LCCP and Ben Browne on the Sun Trust Stage. Activites on the blocks include skate demos, chalk art, and an arcade trailer, plus a kids zone at the Community Market with magic performances, face-painters, jugglers, and balloon artists. Visit your favorite food trucks at the BBT lot Food Truck Round up, toss your name in for grand giveaways at various vendors, and get to know downtown Lynchburg.

New this year, a shuttle service will be available from the James River Conference Center parking lot to the festival.

Be mindful of your furry four legged best friends! For the safety of them and other festival goers, please leave them in the comfort of their own home. Pets are no longer allowed at the festival.
