Art Alley is a placemaking conception turned reality that opened on October 1, 2021 in Downtown Lynchburg. At the intersection of Commerce and 11th Street you will find a blank canvas in the heart of our city that was transformed into a beautiful alleyway for locals and visitors to enjoy. This space is currently one of multiple entrances to the Bluffwalk, and has been upgraded to an inviting gateway to a beautiful public amenity. With the creation of Art Alley, we sought to transform this overlooked area into a vibrant public art location.

The community will find vibrant outdoor galleries, colorful art and light overhead, majestic murals, and outstanding street art. Art Alley elements have been designed by professional artists from all over Central Virginia. In early April of 2021, we posted a call for artists and had over 40 individuals submit their work to potentially be a part of this project. This bright, exciting new attraction is creating a destination that will support local businesses, encourage tourism, and improve the quality of life for our residents.

This project was generously supported by local companies Bank of the James, Pacific Life, Innovative Wireless Technologies, Foster Fuels, First National Bank, Member One Federal Credit Union, Barracks Financial Group, Gentry Locke Attorneys, The Virginian Hotel, Stifel, and Balzer & Associates. It was also supported through grants from Centra Health, the Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation, and the AARP Community Challenge Grant. Special thanks to our property partners Gerdy Construction, Mark Borel, and the City of Lynchburg, along with Image360 who installed all of our rotating art pieces.
