CALL FOR ARTISTS

ART ALLEY REFRESH 2023

Downtown Lynchburg Association (DLA) is a non-profit organization that strives to create a strong, vibrant, and welcoming downtown. We are currently working on updating our beautification project known as Art Alley, which took an underutilized alley/road (11th Street at Commerce) and transformed it into a place to showcase public art. This project included an outdoor gallery that gave local artists (this could be you!) the opportunity to create unique, inspiring artwork that ended up publicly displayed on the Bluffwalk.

The outdoor gallery, along with other components of Art Alley (see examples below), is scheduled to be refreshed this fall with the artwork of a new set of local artists ranging from high school students to professional creatives. Art pieces will be digitized, transferred into vinyl decals, installed on panels, and attached to the building located at 57 11th Street. Artists whose piece has been selected to be displayed downtown will receive an award package and honorarium of $400.

Judging Criteria

Content should spark joy in the viewer.
Artwork enhances the environment and has aesthetic quality - is dynamic and makes people stop and look.
Content is appropriate for all ages and respectful to all communities.
Content is not political, commercial, or religious.

General Timeline

Friday, August 11, 2023 – Submissions due
Week of August 14, 2023 – Art Selection Committee review
Week of August 21, 2023 – Artists will notified/contracts sent
Fall 2023 (Date TBD) – Installation & public announcement (ribbon cutting TBD)

What We Need

8 Portraits (4’ x 8’ panel)
5 Landscapes (5’ x 4’ panel)

Artistic Guidelines

Artwork can be digital or high-resolution photos of physical pieces.
Artists must have written permission to use any copyrighted material.
Artwork might be cropped to fit a specific ratio with permission from the artist.
Artwork will remain the property of the artist, however, each program participant must sign and return an Artist Contract.
Think big. The larger the original artwork, the better the definition when it is enlarged to fit the panel.
