In support of local businesses during this year's holiday season, the City of Lynchburg in partnership with Lynch's Landing will be offering free two-hour parking from Thanksgiving Day to New Year's Day throughout downtown. We hope that this program encourages more Lynchburg area residents and visitors to shop, dine, play, and explore in Downtown Lynchburg, and to make downtown a part of their holiday festivities.

This applies to all City-managed paid parking lots, including: Community Market Lot (Lot H), Corner of Main St. and Commerce St. (Lot E), Suntrust Parking Deck, Midtown Parking Deck, and Clay St. Parking Deck. For visits longer than the 2 free parking in the parking lots, visitor will need to pay at the pay station.

Making parking free for two hours only will welcome daily traffic while still encouraging the turnover needed for retail and restaurants to thrive.

All on-street parking in downtown will remain free from Thanksgiving to January 1, and time limits for those space will be dictated by signage.

Questions on program and details can be referred to Parking Management Department, (434) 455-4045.

  • There will be plenty of free fun for kids: an art area, carnival games with prizes, hula hoops, a reading area, and baby pools full of dry corn (sensory bin/sand box). There will even be a mermaid! Plus, thanks to Enchanting Entertainment, kids can get close to superheros and princesses..

can i bring my super-friendly dog/cat/bird/llama?

No. While we love pets as much as you do, an event this size is simply not pet-friendly. Our number one goal is to provide a safe environment for all festival-goers, and mixing animals with other animals, a large crowd, and small children, would make that difficult. If you bring an animal you will be asked to leave or wait outside the event. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

CAN I COME AND SET UP A TABLE AT THE EVENT?

No. We stopped accepting vendor applications in August. If you would like to participate in next year's festival, please make sure to submit an application when they open in May 2017.

I don't see my question.

First, check the  Get Downtown 2016 website to see if the information you need is online. If not, send your question to us via Facebook and we will add it to our FAQ. Thanks!

El Jefe Tequila Garaje Lynchburg Virginia

El Jefe Taqueria Garaje

Tequila is always a good idea (our official stance), and El Jefe has plenty to go around. Their margaritas made with fresh-squeezed lime and agave are not to be beat anywhere else in town. But even better than their extensive drink menu is their recent expansion, which offers tables on their back deck and the Lower Bluffwalk.

So whether you’re relaxing after work or looking to spend a casual Saturday afternoon downtown, the only thing better than the view is the fresh food; tacos of every variety—chicken, tuna, pork, chorizo, beef, beans, etc.!—served up with ample toppings and salsas.

RA Bistro

Family outing, dinner with a client, first date—RA’s warm atmosphere leaves room for all possibilities. Take your pick from their side patio or back deck that overlooks the streets below and kick back with a specialty cocktail and a seasonal entrée from their modern American menu. You can sometimes catch some live music on a weekend night too. Between Sunday brunch—because $2 mimosas—and their weeknight drink specials—because $5 cocktails—there’s plenty to keep you frequenting this Main Street establishment.

Shoemakers American Grille

Perched on the southern corner of the downtown Bluffwalk and with a view of the James River below, here you’ll find a welcoming patio with lantern-topped tables and comfortable chairs. With a classic surf and turf menu, you can enjoy the elegance of this downtown restaurant surrounded by the beauty of the outdoors. Lights overhead from the neighboring Craddock Terry Hotel create a lovely ambience when twilight arrives, so our recommendation is to pair some rich French pressed coffee and desserts with conversation among friends. If a cocktail is what you are in search of, consider their happy hour, which includes half price wine and beer from 4:30-6:30pm on weeknights. One of Lynchburg's best kept secrets, in our humble opinion.

Jimmys on the James, Lynchburg, Virginia
Jimmys on the James, Lynchburg, Virginia

Jimmy’s on the James

Evoking the warmth and charm of a 1920’s speakeasy, Jimmy’s is a fantastic option to enjoy open-air seating and live music. A renovated dining room transforms with the opening of a glass garage door, giving diners the experience of a street-side café. An ever-evolving menu and consistent drink specials are the highlights of what should be a musical and memorable evening on the town. Take a suggestion and stop by on Wednesdays for a true “happy hour” tasting experience; after a flight of four wines, you can purchase your top choice for only $5 a glass. Paired with an order of their decadent Baby Cakes, could you really ask for anything more when trying to survive the week?

Kegney Brothers
Kegney Brothers

Kegney Brothers

One of the newer additions to the scene, Kegney Brothers has brought a much-needed pub atmosphere to downtown. We love Kegney for its unique character (origins dating to 1879!), its love of all things Irish, its hearty and delicious food, and especially for the late hours and rooftop patio with views of the James River. From Guinness to specialty cocktails, pub fare to tikka masala, you won’t soon forget an evening spent here at the heart of Main Street.

Depot Grille Lynchburg

The Depot Grille

When a train rolls into town, you can't help but stop to watch and listen. On the spacious deck of Depot Grille just a stone’s throw from the edge of Riverfront Park, you not only get a great selection of local brews , you also get a dose of history and a front row seat of the locomotives as they pass through town. Enjoy the shaded view and friendly ambience while sampling a variety of entrees from seafood and steak to pasta and burgers. Plenty of weekly specials—plus once a week All You Can Eat Shrimp feasts—mean you’ll have to visit more than once.

Lynchburg Community Market

The Lynchburg Community Market is a local institution. As one of the oldest continually running markets in the country, The Lynchburg Community Market is not just your source for local produce, but for great prepared food as well. The beauty of this establishment is that you don’t have to choose just one dish; you can have some of Lorraine’s popular crepes and a heaping platter of southern fare from Irene’s, all while enjoying some fresh coffee and pastries on the side—no judgement here! We recommend sitting outside by the fountain where you will most likely meet some of your fellow foodies. Picnic tables are also available.

The White Hart

Not too long ago, this Main Street charmer had closed its doors only to be reopened via community efforts. Now, it’s once again a testament to good coffee, good conversation, and good food. Its back deck has a casual vibe with solid, wooden furniture in the form of gliding benches and pub tables with warm lights overhead. You may be happy with a house-roasted coffee, but keep in mind that they serve up some tasty entrees, satisfying apps, and an assortment of beer and wine as well.

Housed on the main level of the Bank of the James building, Cafe Bliss is building a name for itself with fresh and decadent sweets like raspberry bread pudding and crème brulee pie from their sister shop Montana Plains. Serving up Trager Brothers Organic coffee drinks, this cute little shop delivers an afternoon pick me up with a front row seat to the happenings of Main Street. BONUS: Food Trucks!

If you’re looking for some spontaneity, hit up one of Lynchburg’s many food trucks, serving everything from inventive grilled cheese concoctions to stuffed gyros drizzled in tzatziki sauce. And take an insider’s tip: you may want to save room for a bag of hot apple cider donuts as well. Our recommendation is to enjoy your food with a great view from the Monument Terrace steps or to have an easy and quiet picnic at Riverfront Park.

Art on Main ~ April 1, 2016

Join us to kickstart our newest project Art on Main and meet
participating Artists!

This upcoming First Friday, April 1st, 2016 is the launch of “ART ON MAIN”, showing art in vacant buildings on Main Street in Lynchburg between the 700 and 1300 Block.

An open (to the public) reception with artists and members of the Arts Council will be held on First Friday, April 1 at 1300 Main Street, future home of the Grassroots Local Market.
More information and bios of the artists can be found here:
http://www.jamesriverarts.net/art-on-main.

The concept of art in vacant buildings is not new; it’s been done before, like Syracuse NY and St. Louis, MO. The benefit of art in vacant windows is proven to be effective in ...various aspects:
Art in windows provides the visitor a feeling of security and creates an aesthetic focal point in an otherwise unsightly abandoned building.
“A vacant building creates a mental “end of street” for the visitor, and they often turn around, leaving the next business just beyond the vacant one without a potential sale. But occupying the vacant building with art or an aesthetic focal point changes the “end of street” to somewhere else; says Jason St. Clair, Board Member of the JRCAH and manager of this project, “simply put, the art helps create a bridge from one store to another.

Additionally, attention is not placed on the artist’s work that cannot otherwise be promoted. Property owners struggling to lease their building get more eyes on their building, which could potentially lead to a quicker time to lease.
Finally, the community benefits by having vacant buildings transformed to an outdoor art exhibit, and promoting the exhibit brings more foot traffic downtown”

“With Grassroots Local Market being a community supported initiative, we find it important to support other organizations with similarly minded community oriented goals. Believing in our local citizens and their work will only help bring to life the city we all want to see thrive. Community supporting community is what it is all about!” Victoria Bartholomew, Grassroots Local Market

“The arts, including public art, play an important role in developing vital communities”, said Kim Soerensen, president of the James River Council. “They foster creativity and heighten our cultural intelligence. Public art gives a City personality. An arts-oriented City creates a positive effect on business development and social and physical connectivity. The James River Council for the Arts and Humanities is proud to create projects and provide platforms like this that advance both the arts and economic development.
We appreciate all building owners lending their spaces and especially Grassroots Local Market for allowing us to have a reception at their future location. This collaboration between the arts and businesses is what helps our community to strive as a whole”

Grassroots Local Market Informational Meeting~January 14

Downtown Grocery! Your Input is Needed.

The newly formed Lynchburg Food Cooperative needs your input on a full service, downtown grocery. Cooperatives are community owned and governed organizations meaning you, your friends, and neighbors can determine how the new store will look and what it will offer. Learn why the co-op was formed, it's advantages and goals, the nature of community ownership, and why your participation is critical to bringing the store to life. A full service grocery is the most asked for service by downtown residents, and your attendance is crucial to this grassroots, community based initiative.

Be a part of this dynamic initiative - let's make downtown all it can be by adding a full service grocery this year!

Join us for WINTERLIGHTS 2016

Winter Lights 2016 is a FREE outdoor exhibit of light-based art along the Bluffwalk developed by the JRCAH in partnership with AEP and the City of Lynchburg, to be launched on the First Friday in February 2016.

This event is providing an opportunity for Lynchburg’s citizens to engage with unique art and experience downtown in a new and unexpected ...way. It will delight all ages and invite to take a stroll along the Bluffwalk.

With the use of recycled holiday lighting, artists, individuals and groups are invited to create vibrant illumination art , which displayed along the Bluffwalk during the month of February, attracting audiences to Downtown during a rather dormant period.
“Inspired by similar projects (Inlight Richmond, Zoolights at the National Zoo, the Baltimore Zoo) the installation will attract and delight a wide demographic of all ages.” According to David Neumeyer, Vice-President of the James River Council for the Arts & Humanities.

Open call for artists, individuals and groups:
Deadline for design submissions is December 15th
Prizes totaling $1000 will be awarded for best designs in two categories. First, second and third prize will be awarded from a panel of judges and by popular voting.
