Downtown days are better when your dog gets to come along.
Over the spring we spent a few months walking downtown with a leash in hand, looking for the places that don't just tolerate dogs but actually plan for them - the patios with water bowls waiting, the shops with a treat jar behind the register, the staff who know your pup by name. We called it Paws Downtown. Here's where it took us.
My Dog Duke's Diner
1007 Commerce Street
The name is not a coincidence. Duke's covered patio was designed with dogs in mind, down to the leash hooks, and the staff are known to bring out water bowls without being asked. There's a Good Puppers Menu, which is exactly what it sounds like.
For people, it's all-day breakfast, specialty coffee, creative lunch dishes, and cocktails, inside a beautifully restored building. Open daily 7 AM to 2:30 PM, which makes it the natural stop after a morning walk.
The Water Dog
1016 Jefferson Street
An extensive riverside beer garden with plenty of outdoor seating, and 36 draft brews sourced as locally as possible. The menu is built for sharing - raw oysters, house-made fries, grilled cheese, shareable apps, and cookies baked in house.
It sits right by the river, so it's an easy finish to a walk on the Blackwater Creek Trail with a tired dog at your feet.

Lynchburg's first and only winery, and the pet-friendly patio has fire pits - which makes this the one that keeps working after the summer patios close. Come for a wine flight, a glass with friends, or a full charcuterie spread built around award-winning Virginia wines.
Fratelli Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar
1200 Commerce Street, Suite 200
Authentic Italian with a focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients, perched on the historic Bluffwalk with views of the James River. The pet-friendly seating runs along the Bluffwalk, so your dog gets the river view too.
Lexie & Lee
1220 Main Street
Dogs are always welcome, and there are treats behind the counter for visiting pups. The staff have a few regulars they know by name - which tells you most of what you need to know about the place.
Lynchburg Community Market

Grab a coffee, browse the local vendors, and take in the morning together. The market is pet-friendly throughout, and it's the easiest low-commitment outing on this list: leash up, stroll through, and don't be surprised if your dog becomes the main character of everyone else's morning.
Making a day of it
Every stop on this list is within a few blocks of the others, and the Blackwater Creek Trail connects to the riverfront end of downtown. You can reasonably do coffee at Duke's, a loop on the trail, and a drink at The Water Dog without ever getting back in the car.
