A Day Downtown with Tess Ritchie

Tess Ritchie - 6BFF616F-D751-41A1-B77A-4166E5C9728A.jpeg

Hi! I’m Tess Ritchie. I am a Sophomore at Liberty University from Charlotte, North Carolina. I’m so thankful to the Downtown Lynchburg Association for letting me take you guys with me throughout my day in Downtown Lynchburg with their Downtown Lynchburg Gift Card. My friend, Faith West, who is a local photographer, spent the day with me and took all of the pictures throughout our day downtown.

A nice thing about the Downtown Lynchburg Gift Card is that you can track your balance on your receipt (it shows up as ##x## right next to the Authorization Code) after you buy something, so it is super easy to know how much money you have left! You can also check your balance online.

The White Hart Cafe

Gift Card Purchase: $9.00

The first place we went to on our day downtown was The White Hart Cafe! This is my favorite coffee shop in Lynchburg because of its calm atmosphere and kind employees which makes it perfect for studying. I used my Downtown Lynchburg Gift Card and got an iced chai latte with vanilla and a cookie. The White Hart has lots of seating options which is something that I look for when finding a coffee shop I love. This is a great place to go to with your friends or if you need a place to get a lot of homework done.

Live Trendy or Die

Gift Card Purchase: $48.44

The next place we visited was Live Trendy or Die. This boutique is by far my favorite store downtown! They have so many cute clothes and accessories all at an affordable price. While I went throughout the store, I found so many adorable things and it was hard to not try on everything. I ended up getting a perfect white dress that looks just like a dress that I have been wanting forever- but this one was half the price! This store also has a section of vintage clothes which I love because you can find something that no one else has!

Gilded

Gift Card Purchase: $10.11

Next, we stopped by Gilded which is right next door to Live Trendy or Die. They sell cards, candles, and so many cute little things that you can use whether it be for school, work, or even around the house. With so much to look at, you can spend forever browsing. There are lots of things that you won’t see at first glance, including some dainty necklaces and earrings that would match any outfit! While I was in Gilded, I found a small notebook that is easy to carry which is exactly what I was looking for! Another great thing about Gilded is that THEY SELL Downtown Lynchburg Gift Cards. Whether it’s for yourself or for a friend, the Downtown Lynchburg Gift Card is the perfect gift for anyone!

Ayven Avenue

NOW ACCEPTING DOWNTOWN LYNCHBURG GIFT CARDS

Ayven Avenue Boutique was the next stop on our list. Faith has been telling me to go for so long because she’s so obsessed with the store! A thing I really liked about this store is how they’ve decorated. It’s in an old house and the back wall is a huge mirror, so it is really easy to see what clothes would look like on you. They have so many cute clothes and accessories, but I would have to say my favorite thing about this boutique would have to be the shoes! They have so many choices and they are all so cute and unlike any that you would be able to find at the mall.

RiverWalk Trail

Right before dinner we decided to go to the RiverWalk Trail to take some pictures. This is such a pretty area, and it is the perfect scenic place to spend time with your friends or go on a picnic. It’s also a great place to take pictures whether it’s raining like it was on the day we went or if it’s sunny! With so many amazing places nearby like Riverfront Park, Dublin 3 Coffeehouse, MayLynn’s Creamery, and The Depot Grille (which is where we went next), it’s the perfect location.

The Depot Grille

Gift Card Purchase: $24.07

The Depot Grille is the best place to go for dinner because it has such a comfortable atmosphere and the staff there is amazing. Our waiter and waitress were both so nice and made our time there even better. We got cheese fries as an appetizer which were absolutely delicious and I highly recommend them! For our meals, Faith got the Southwest Salad, and I got the Pretzel Club Sandwich. We loved our meals! We weren’t planning on getting dessert, but our awesome waiter talked us into getting the Brownie Sundae. He didn’t lie when he said it was delicious. Overall, The Depot is the perfect place to go, especially with big groups, because they have such a variety of food on their menu which will make everyone happy.

I had the best day downtown with Faith and I am happy I could take you guys with me! A huge thank you to the Downtown Lynchburg Association for giving me the opportunity to do this! I highly recommend buying Downtown Lynchburg Gift Cards for friends or family. You can see and do so many things with it!

Snag your own Downtown Lynchburg Gift Card online or in-person at Gilded or Mission House Coffee.

Getting Crafty in Downtown Lynchburg

While we are pumped to leave 2020 behind, we all know that January can get a bit cold and gloomy. We might even get - dare we say it- SNOWED IN. ❄️

So, while you are stuck at home making soups and bread, consider upping your craft game. You might be surprised at the artistic offerings in Downtown Lynchburg.

What to get: ANYTHING in the store

The Art Box is your number one stop for your creative needs. They have supplies for the painter, the potter, the sketcher, the writer, the bookmaker, and everything in between (really).

But don’t fret, you don’t have to be a professional to shop here. The exceptional staff are all artists themselves and are happy to connect beginners with the right tools for whatever project they are undertaking!

920 Commerce Street

What to get: feathers

Barred marabou blood quills. Stripped goose biots. Peacock swords. They're not just fun names to say – they are beautiful feathers. Sure, they are intended to be turned into some pretty wicked flies for catching fish (you can still do that by following along with the TaleTellers blog).

We envision projects for the home like festive votive holders or chic wall hangings, and advanced crafters have hours of jewelry-making in their future!

What to get: Alpaca wool

It’s a knitter’s dream! Take your pick from a wall of wool in the back of Spearman Artisanry and start all of those scarves, hats, and blankets that are on your list.

But, why buy alpaca wool? Well, it is natural, biodegradable, moisture-wicking, windproof, durable, stain-resistant, and allows the perfect body temperature. Boom!

What to get: Flowers, flowers, and more flowers

The Hip Tulip is your wildflower florist, and while they are happy to customize an arrangement, you can also choose from individual stems for your next craft.

Maybe you want to feel like a pretty, pretty princess with a DIY flower crown. Or, you can dry them out to make scrapbooking crafts or press them into frames.

139 12th Street

What to get: Fabric

Fabric, yards of it! See what we did there?

But, honestly, we aren’t talking little scraps. Estates & Consignments has a wide variety of full bolts - solids, stripes, and patterns. One thing is certain, they are top quality and will be a great match for sewing your next set of curtains or reupholstering those dining room chairs.

1301 Main Street

What to get: Something you can breathe new life into

Speaking of upholstery, maybe it’s time you grabbed a piece with a little history and gave it a glow-up.

Yes, Estates Revisited has pristine vintage pieces that don’t need any TLC but you might also find a slightly dingy sideboard or a tarnished bar cart that will be stunning once you are through. Best of all, when you can humble-brag on your talents when those compliments start rolling in.

tempImage2duDdy.jpg

1216 Main Street

What to get: Tools, glue, and other supplies

Hear us out - Bailey Spencer isn’t just for ordering a custom Chippendale door or sourcing the perfect antique clawfoot bathtub. Just take two steps past the register to find the fixings you need to practically any project.

Wood glue? Got it. Finishing nails? You betcha! Paint brushes? Take your pick. Plus, in a time when avoiding crowds is an olympic sport, popping into your local hardware store is the way to go.

What to get: An online painting class

Did someone say paint night? For months, the Academy Center of the Arts has been upping their education game and moving to online classes for artists of any level.

Do a solo session as you create a winter night sky, have a romantic Valentine’s Day as you paint a date-night birch tree scene with your partner, or bring the whole family in for some handprint penguin fun. The Academy will provide your supplies and you can even add on a bottle of wine!

402 5th Street

What to get: Blacksmithing & Woodworking Classes

Workshops are back at Vector Space this month and we couldn’t be more thrilled! If you haven’t been to this shared makerspace yet, you are missing out. Most days, it is only accessible to members only (membership open for a limited time), so signing up for a workshop is a great way to see it in its glory while learning a new skill.

Coming up in January - try your hand at the wood lathe or CNC router, get introduced to blacksmithing, or carve you very own wooden spoon!

901 Jefferson Street

What to get: Inspiration

If we haven’t gotten your creative juices flowing by now, maybe it’s time you head down your own inspiration alley at Riverviews Artspace. Check out their new exhibits opening on January 8 for First Fridays or arrange a visit by appointment.

If leaving the house is scary (we get it - we’ve all gotten a bit into the “hermit” stage of the pandemic at one time or another), then cue up the Coffee with Curators podcast and enjoy it from the comfort of your couch.

So, there you have it. So many great ways to get crafty while supporting local businesses in Downtown Lynchburg.

Still not motivated? Just get a puzzle from Gilded and call it a day.

A Day Downtown with Walter Virgil

We recently asked downtown resident and community member, Walter Virgil, Jr. to take us along with him (figuratively) for a day in Downtown Lynchburg. This busy man never stops - breakfast and lunch, business calls and outdoor recreation, professional meetings and personal purchases - you might be surprised how much can be achieved in our city center.

Walter was armed with some Downtown Lynchburg Gift Cards, and with over 30 participating businesses, he had plenty of options on which locally-owned small businesses to support."

Note: Not every business he stopped at accepts the Downtown Lynchburg Gift Card…but we’re working on it. We’ll let you know who’s on the program by marking them** and you can check out the list of participating businesses by clicking here.

Check out his day ⇩⇩

IMG_6286.jpeg

Who is Walter Virgil, Jr?

I am commonly asked the question, “what is it that you do?” Well… I serve as:

  • CEO of Get Fresh and Live, a non-profit initiative pro-actively attacking mass incarnation rates through programming geared to cultivating healthy self perception within at risk young men

  • Owner of Walter Virgil and Associates LLC rendering consultation from community development, diversity equity inclusion education and crisis management while representing executive men’s fashion brands.

  • Community Liaison for Bishop S.Y. Younger, The Ramp Church International

  • Active Board member: Centra, Community Benefits Board, Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra Executive Board

I’m blessed to be invited to be a part of a number of projects and endeavors that grant me the opportunity to connect with some of the most amazing people in the City of Lynchburg.

I’m really excited about having you guys with me for the day. I’ll be taking you to some of my favorite places to eat, work and play. Special thanks to Downtown Lynchburg Association for sponsoring a fairly average day of activity with their Downtown Lynchburg Gift Card. Let’s get to it!

I had to start the day with a good home-cooked breakfast, and I couldn’t think of a better spot than Barb’s Dreamhut located in the Lynchburg Community Market. I LOVE Ms. Barb’s because the food is amazing and reminds me of my late Momo (grandmother) Matti Virgil’s cooking. The smells alone are nostalgic, but what seals the deal for me is when I get to the window and it’s her, "Ms. Barb," ready to take care of me. She has a way of making you feel like you’re one of her own. She doesn’t just take your order, but if you decide to eat-in within the market, she’ll bring it to your table insuring that you have all of the condiments and napkins you need. Sweet woman and delicious food cooked. No better way to start the day.

File_017.jpg

While I was waiting for my food I made my way over to Oshun Organics** (which is in the Market as well), and checked out Karrye’s all-natural products. It’s not hard to find her. Just take a deep breath and follow the beautiful aromatic scents of Lavender Sage, Turkish Rose and Orange Patchouli Vanilla. The scrub demo was great. The soaps, oils, and body butters where fantastic. Check them out when you get a chance. You can even buy online for free local pick-up.

Unfortunately, by the time I took my first few bites I received my initial thread of calls for the day and I had to box up my breakfast.

Prior to heading into Ms. Barb’s, I ran into Andy Young of Mass Mutual Wyndhurst and my fellow Lynchburg Regional Business Alliance Bro. He told me that there was a ribbon cutting going, so I decided to crash it! While leaving the Market I handed my box to my photographer for the day, Derrick Hairston and told him to meet me at the Dot Drives office on Jefferson street. I had to free up my hands because I’ve been obsessed with the Bird scooters downtown. I uploaded the app and hit the streets as fast as the scooter could take me (16mph). Lol.

File_019.jpg

I pulled up to the Dot Drives office (donor engagment software for non-profits) on Jefferson just to find out that it was in the same building as Bikes Unlimited. The moment I stepped into the door I was greeted by the man himself, Sal Ferlise.

File_012.jpg

Heath Barret from the Alliance had the scissors out; it was apparent that I made it just in time for the picture and the cut.

While there I saw a lot of my friends and met some new ones. I met Ben and the Knapsack crew, I learned how they’re making amazing Squarespace websites for companies both big and small all over the country from their office space right here in the Hill City. As I looked down at my watch, I realized that I had to get to my office to respond to some emails and prep for a zoom consultation.

While heading outside, I decided to jump back on my scooter and fly to my office at 801 Church Street.

While pulling up I had to admire the awesome work that Daryl & Johanna Calfee and their Penny Lane Properties crew did on the 801 Church location. The beginning of December, Evolving Solution Services made this beautiful place our new home. It’s SUPER cool that we’re now next door neighbors to one of our clients, the City of Lynchburg. We provide staffing services to both the Water Department and Public Works. We’re very proud of the many people we’ve been able to put to work at a living wage.

As I wrapped up my consultation, I got a call from my gorgeous fiancée, Kristal Knowles.

File_009.jpg

She was at the YWCA Church Street Bridal** finalizing her choice. I’m so happy her search is now over. Of course I don’t have a clue what this dress looks like, but I’m confident that Kristal picked something GREAT with the help of Rachel Cantu and the rest of her team. Kristal told me that Rachel was patient and such a joy to work with. We’re blessed to know that the proceeds of this dress will go into programming, resources and shelter to women who survived domestic violence through the YWCA of Central Virginia. Please learn more about this program and support.

By this time, we were ready for something to eat. We decided to meet up at The White Hart Cafe**, one of my favorite spots for coffee meetings in the city. The White Hart Cafe has become a legitimate watering hole. On any given day you can see people from all walks of life there. Anyone from City officials, professors, executives, college students and various members of our community that may be going through a tough time all having a cup of coffee together. The coffee is great and the food is exceptional as well. I’ve had everything on the menu and I can testify that you cannot go wrong. I promise I’m not saying this because one of the owners, " Vic Stanley," is my Good Brother. This was my spot before he bought it! Lol

File_008.jpg

I was excited about having lunch with Kristal especially because we had a special guest, DJ!!

File_005.jpg

DJ is Kristal’s brilliant 5 year old son and I get the honor of being his stepdad and teaching him what honorable manhood denotes and requires.

We enjoyed our lunch and decided to go to Percival’s Island. I thought, “if we’re going to Percival’s island we might as well rent some bikes.” While we had lunch I talked about how cool the Bird scooters were and immediately DJ told me that he wanted to try it. I promised him we’d ride one down to Bikes Unlimited.

Once we arrived to Bike’s Unlimited we were welcomed by Ben. Ben was super helpful. He guided us through the online registration and waiver for rental. It was very easy and before you knew it we had our bikes rolling.

The rain cut our bike ride short, so we decided to head back to our new home and take some couple photos with the great Derrick Hairston.

File_000.jpg

Special shootout to the Downtown Lynchburg Association for giving me this opportunity to share a little about myself, my family and a few of my favorite things to do downtown. Wishing everyone Happy Holidays.

No, Walter. Thank YOU!

Take Your Own Oktoberfest Tour

Germany canceling Oktoberfest had us shook. After all, the festival originated on October 12, 1810. We’ll say that again EIGHTEEN-TEN. And if a 200 year-old festival is taking a year off, then I guess that we can’t complain.

But, if 2020 has taught us nothing else, it’s how to pivot…and pivot we shall! Rather than lamenting over the lack of beer festivals, let’s lace up those boots and take a trek to the many great Downtown Lynchburg breweries and restaurants serving up seasonal selections. We followed a group of friends around downtown as they took part in our Downtown Lynchburg Oktoberfest walking tour. Now it’s your turn!

Whether you complete it in one fell-swoop (like we did - it CAN be done) or spread it out over all thirty-one days in October, these businesses will be happy to have you!

Start the journey in any order you like.

WHAT TO DRINK: DRIFTER’S APPLE ALE (APPLE GRAF)

Sweet with a complex side. No, we are not talking about our last significant other. Described to be “as close to cider as a beer can get”, Drifters Apple Ale is a half and half blend of unfermented beer and unfiltered apple cider fermented together. Come to think about it, if that relationship had been this well balanced, we might still be together.

WHAT TO DRINK: STARR HILL LAST LEAF (BROWN ALE)

You had me at “real Virginia maple syrup”. While some people go pumpkin-spice crazy this time of year, there’s no denying this delicious blend of nutty goodness layered with notes of maple and vanilla. Well rounded with a beautiful mahogany color, each sip of this English ale will make you want to close your eyes and and imagine crunching through the fallen leaves.

Don’t discount this Boston classic. The folks at Sam Adams know how to make a märzen that is meant to fill your stein. Smooth with a roasty sweetness and light hop character, this one pair well with pretzels and college football. So go ahead and order a salted caramel brownie topped with vanilla ice cream rolled in crushed pretzels while you are at it. You won’t regret it!

Blue Mountain Brewery isn’t joking around in the creation of this “festbier.” Not only do they use Munich, Vienna, and German pilsner malt and hop it exclusively with Hallertau variety hops, they ensure that it meets the Stammürze Law - stating that a beer must have an original gravity of 13.5° plato to be served at Oktoberfest in Munich. Daaaaang. But don’t worry, you don’t have to be as intense to drink it as Blue Mountain is to brew it. Prost!

10 Simple Ways to Support Small

We know you’ve heard it before. Shop Small. Support Local. But such a broad concept can be a lot to wrap your mind around. So rather than leaving you out there to figure out exactly what it means, we’ve gathered a list of practical things you can do to support your friendly local business owners right now.

POST A PHOTO OF YOUR PURCHASE

“I didn’t know that you could get THAT in Downtown Lynchburg!” We hear it all of the time. So, don’t be shy…it’s time to tell all of your friends about that great new outfit you got or the weekend brunch special that was SO DELICIOUS. You aren’t showing off, you are spreading the word. But, if food photos and selfies aren’t your thing, remember that you can always hit that little paper-airplane button and share that businesses’ instagram post to your stories.

TAKE A STAY-CATION

Leave those dirty dishes in the sink and escape. That’s right. We said it. Staring at the same four walls each day (especially if you are teleworking) can be a bummer. As luck would have it, there are some fantastic hotels in Downtown Lynchburg who have upped their game on safety standards and are ready to help you take that load off! So, grab your toothbrush and prepare for your next escape - even if it’s just down the road.

BUY A GIFT CARD

Are you the type of person who raids the gift card rack for birthdays, baby showers, Chanukah, Christmas, and everything in between? You can admit it. There’s no judgement here. BUT, you might hurt our feelings if you pass by this opportunity to stock up on Downtown Lynchburg Gift Cards. They can be used at over 30 participating businesses in Downtown Lynchburg and you can buy them online. Easy-peasy.

ATTEND AN EVENT - ONLINE OR OTHERWISE

Yep. We miss socializing. Desperately. Seeing people we know, some we don’t, and bumping into someone you haven’t seen in ages. Events are starting to come back to downtown (distanced indoor and outdoor), and even if you aren’t comfortable being face to face, there are plenty of online events still being hosted by entertainment and attraction venues. Check out our new and improved events calendar to see them all in one place. Search by venue, category, you name it!

GET TAKEOUT (AND LEAVE A GENEROUS TIP)

This one's a no-brainer. Takeout is the easy solution for dinner. And now, with even more online ordering and delivery options, it’s easier than ever to get what you want. But, don’t forget that wait staff need love, too - with social distancing, they are only able to provide their exceptional service to a fraction of the tables they used to. So, even if you are picking up your meal curbside, go ahead a leave them a great tip. After all, you didn’t even have to get out of your car.

Visit our DINE Directory to choose your next meal!

TAKE A CLASS

Is it time to take off that Quarantine-15? The YMCA is ready to welcome you back. They even have a capacity checker so that you can plan the best possible time for your visit!

Perhaps you’ve completed ALL OF THE PUZZLES and need a new skill. The Academy Center of the Arts is offering classes (in-person or online) with everything from drawing to smartphone photography. Want to work at your own pace? Become a member of the SPARKS Lab at Riverviews or Vector Space. Maybe you just can’t think of any more kids crafts. Check out a kit from Amazement Square’s STEAM Lending Program or visit in-person to join in on weekly Art Expeditions or The Hive Open Makerspace.

Come to think about it - you might be booked solid for the next three months. You’re welcome.

DONATE TO A LOCAL NONPROFIT

There are so many wonderful non-profits with a diverse set of missions that call Downtown Lynchburg their home and we couldn’t be more proud to have them in our community. Many survive on the generosity of others to continue their service. However, in today’s COVID world, traditional fundraising methods like galas and live auctions are just not going to cut it. So, here’s your call to action: take some time to make a donation, no matter how large or small.

And, if you absolutely can’t decide, you can always find one of the brand new caring meters to empty your spare change. Funds collected in these bright green beauties will be distributed to various organizations via the Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation.

SHOP FOR LOCALLY GROWN GROCERIES

It’s worth the effort to buy produce grown in Virginia. It just tastes better. See for yourself by making a trip to the Lynchburg Community Market a part of your Saturday morning routine. While you are there, you can pick up some hard-to-find filipino groceries at Philippine Delight, grab a bag of freshly roasted coffee at Grains of Sense, and maybe even splurge on a dozen doughnuts from Father’s Cafe & Bakery. It’s called multitasking.

SUPPORT A LOCAL ARTIST

Downtown Lynchburg wasn’t named the James River Arts & Culture District on a whim. Not only are there plenty of retail shops that carry one-of-a-kind products crafted here in Lynchburg, but you can connect to masterpieces at galleries like Riverviews Artspace, the Academy Center of the Arts, and even exhibitions at The Virginian. Make an evening of it by attending First Fridays every month and take add something to your collection.

WRITE A GLOWING REVIEW

Have you ever filtered a list by ratings? Yeah, it can really help narrow down a decision. It costs you nothing other than your time to write a positive review of a Downtown business and, trust us, these owners will be SO grateful. Not only will you be helping attract visitors to their business, but you will be giving them a few uplifting words to make them smile. That in itself is priceless (cheesy, but true).

And there you have it. Go ahead, be that Local Champion. You have our permission.

But, honestly, you can’t go wrong with any of their handheld creations (menu) designed for your next stroll around downtown.

The Depot Grille

But we won’t dwell on that. There’s been a lot of cool things that have gone across those tables with a crayon.“ - Dave Poole, Owner of The Depot Grille

The Water Dog

“One of the most valuable things I’ve learned from having a labrador is that the dog itself doesn’t understand the difference between work and play. I was always so enamored by that mentality and so I tried to create a place that encapsulated that concept. The name ‘The Water Dog’ just easily followed.“ - Dave Henderson, Owner of The Water Dog

gnocchi alla sorrentina

Number of servings: 4

Ingredients:
2 pounds of potato gnocchi
1/2 pound of mozzarella
1 box of Pomì strained tomatoes
1/2 of an onion
2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil
Grated Parmigiano Reggiano
Fresh basil
Salt

Directions:
Preheat the oven to 350F.

Prepare a simple tomato sauce. Begin by slicing the onion and sauté it in oil. Add a 1 tablespoon of strained tomatoes while the onions sauté. After 3-4 minutes of cooking the onions, add the rest of the strained tomatoes and a pinch of salt. Cook for no more than 20 minutes, then remove from heat, add the chopped basil, and set aside.

Boil the gnocchi for 1-2 minutes. Be sure they are well separated before adding them to the pot. Drain and return to pot. Place 1 tablespoon of sauce in an oven-proof container, just enough to coat the bottom. Add 3 or 4 tablespoon of sauce to the pot of gnocchi and mix gently. Add the gnocchi to the container, topping with mozzarella and some more sauce. Sprinkle generously with grated Parmigiano Reggiano and add more basil. Cook in the oven for 20 minutes.

Marco was born in Naples, so he certainly knows Italian cuisine. Check out his food blog (a pandemic project) for more recipes.

He also knows great opera. He spent two decades as an opera singer, vocal coach, and, more recently, stage director. Their Life These Days project offers Lynchburg children the opportunity to write poetry and see their work set to music by acclaimed composers and performed by professional opera singers.

“DLA has always been by my side. As a business owner, I’ve always felt super-super-super supported by them. It was never really a question of should I support them, but rather how much am I able to support them. The value was always there for me from the start.”

★ Pop-Up ★ Takeout Patio

In an effort to promote the support of local restaurants, we have created a pop-up Takeout Patio in the Birch Grove area of Riverfront Park, directly beside The Depot Grille. As restaurants continue to experience limited seating capacity, DLA wants to spread the message that supporting local restaurants through takeout is still needed to help them stay strong. The creation of the Takeout Patio is aimed at providing a beautiful place for area residents to enjoy food from their favorite downtown spots.

The Takeout Patio includes new brightly-colored bistro seating, picnic tables, and whimsical decor. All tables are spaced at least 10-feet apart, and the patio includes signage on how to safely visit and enjoy the space. DLA asks area citizens to use the space responsibility, making sure to keep groups to less than ten, keep an appropriate distance between other park-goers, use provided cleaning supplies to wipe down tables when needed, and to wash hands before and after vitising. DLA staff, volunteers, and partners will clean and reset the space each morning.

The Birch Grove is located directly beside The Depot Grille and is adjacent to the Riverwalk Trail, including shade trees, benches, and bike racks. It was built in 2007 as a part of the first phase of improvements laid out in the 2000 Lynchburg Downtown & Riverfront Master Plan.

The City of LynchburgThe Depot Grille, The Water Dog, and Vector Space all helped to make this project happen.

Grab & Go: Beer and Wine Options in Downtown Lynchburg

By our observations, purchasing trends have prioritized toilet paper, bread, and booze. While we might not understand stockpiling enough TP to build a fort, we realize that you can’t show up to that Virtual Happy Hour empty handed!

Rather than venture into the supermarket, why not grab a growler of your favorite IPA or a lovely rosé curbside from a locally owned business? Scroll on down to see what Downtown businesses are offering to-go service (in no particular order).

At-Home Recipes from Chef Jason

As the majority of people are working from home,  Culinary Director Jason Arbusto of Craddock Terry Hotel on the Bluff wanted to share a few food and drink recipes that can be made at home.

image002.png

Apple Pie cocktail

1 oz Bacardi white rum

1oz Carpano Italian vermouth

.25 oz simple syrup

.25 oz apricot brandy, 2 dash grenadine

Shaken and chilled in a prism coupe.

image009.jpg

.25 oz sweet vermouth

Served in a martini glass with an orange slice.

image004.jpg

Grilled Shrimp with Chayote Squash and Lime Aioli

5 Jumbo shrimp with tail on, head off

Lime aioli (house made mayo 8oz with zest and juice of 2 limes, pinch of salt, pinch of paprika)

3 oz roasted Chayote squash (cut into 1-inch pieces, remove the large seed in the middle, then roasted on high heat for 15 min with salt and pepper)

½ ear of corn roasted whole and cut off the cob

3 each peppadew peppers

1 oz cotija cheese crumbled

3-5 sprigs fresh cilantro

Grill or sauté the shrimp with olive oil salt and pepper 2 minutes each side, until the color changes and the shrimp become firm.

In the meantime, heat up the corn and the chayote in the oven 2-3 min.

Plate up: make a circle of the lime aioli in the middle of the plate then make a ‘pretty pile’ of shrimp, chayote and corn, paying attention to not make it look to contrived, but you want to see all the ingredients. Next add the garnishes of cotija cheese, peppadew peppers and cilantro leaves.

Grilled Ribeye with West VA ramp hash, Fingerling potatoes and Ramp Chimichurri

image008.jpg

16 oz ribeye, fat trimmed and rendered

2 oz purple brussel sprouts, cut in 1/2

2 oz fingerling potatoes, poached in beef fat and cut in ½

1 oz smoky bacon, sliced ¼ inch thick and precooked in large slices

1 oz asparagus

2 each Wild West VA Ramps, grilled

Ramp chimichurri sauce (see below)

Grill and rest the Ribeye to desired temperature, usually 3-5 minutes on each side over high heat then rested for 5 minutes before tossing back on the fire.

In the meantime, heat up a pan with rendered beef fat and a little bit of butter and add the fingerling potatoes and Brussel sprouts until they are colored on each side, add bacon and then the rest of the asparagus. Season with salt and pepper. Grill the ramps off until soft but not mushy over medium heat.

Plate up : Drizzle the steak with the ramp chimichurri and let some fall on the plate, make a ‘pretty pile’ of the hash on top of the steak and let it fall on the plate where it may, and then add the grilled ramps on top.

Ramp Chimichurri Sauce

1 T Cumin, 2 t grated ginger

½ t coriander seeds

3 T olive oil

juice and zest of one lemon

1 t kosher salt

1 bunch of cilantro

4 West Virginia ramps

1 bunch of parsley

½ bunch of mint

4 garlic cloves

2 T smoked paprika

Blend all together in a food processor until slightly smooth but with chucky texture.

10 Activities to Keep Cabin Fever at Bay

We’re social creatures and while distancing is necessary, it’s, quite frankly, a bummer. We understand that there is just SO MUCH Netflix a person can watch without getting a little stir-crazy. Canceled plans and closed businesses, even just for the time being means that we have to think a bit outside of the box to stay busy (and sane).

BONUS: Most of these suggestions will still allow you to support our downtown businesses during these challenging times!

Isolation DOES NOT equal quarantine. Just because you have to stay alone, you don’t have to stay inside. Walking is great but can’t compete with the sensation of wind in your hair. And, if your tires haven’t hit the trail since last summer, you are still in luck. Both Bikes Unlimited and Scene 3 are offering special service options…and will even wipe off all of the cooties.

The TaleTellers website has impressed us for quite a while - it’s obvious that the owner Ethan Martin know’s a thing or two about fly fishing. But what’s really amazing is the amount of information there. We’d direct the novice to read the What do you really need to start fly fishing blog where the expert might be more interested in the Fishing Reports. If you are a visual creature, there are plenty of pretty pictures and videos to keep you busy! Next step: buy your rod (from their online store, obvi) and find a stream.

Sort your Jewelry (and play dress-up)

Supports: Bowen Jewelry Company

How: Discounted Shipping on Repairs & Custom Orders

It’s pretty much time for Spring Cleaning, right? Take the opportunity to open your windows, air out your closets, and sort through your drawers. You might finally decide to fix that clasp on your grandmother’s necklace or have the battery replaced in your watch. Either way, jewelry repair is a pretty solitary profession, so it’s safe to say that Bowen Jewelry Company is still here to bring new life to your treasures.
