Small Business Saturday Retail Shop Crawl

OTHER SHOPS TO VISIT IN DOWNTOWN LYNCHBURG

These retailers might not be on the Small Business Saturday Shop Crawl, but they have so much to offer. Be sure to check them out!

Wings, Beer, & Football

Fiery reds, vibrant oranges, and deep rich browns. No, we’re not describing foliage on the Blue Ridge; we’ve got wings on the brain! We love a good PSL, but the change in weather has got us hyped for football with friends, a cold glass of Oktoberfest, and plenty of flats and drums to go around. College or pro, no matter your team, why not root for them while taking a tour of the tasty options in Downtown Lynchburg?

Scroll down to start planning your weekend!

{RA} Bistro

1344 Main Street

Looking for traditional wings? Grab an order of bone-in wings tossed in house-made buffalo hot sauce served with celery for just $11. Instagram user @Aleisha7103 says that “RA Bistro definitely has the best wings in Lynchburg.” While you’re at it, enjoy a refreshing Bistro Beer, {RA}’s house pilsner (Natty Bo) for $3. Can’t beat that!

Liam & Pierre Wings and starr hill Taproom

1300 Main Street

Did you know that Liam & Pierre Wings (part of the Cathy Marlene Hospitality Group) offers free delivery to Starr Hill on Main?!? Depending on your appetite and propensity for sharing, order quantities of 6, 12, 18, 24, or 100 wings (from $7.75 - $120). With more than 10 flavors to try including blackberry habanero bbq, seven pepper spice dry rub, teriyaki with sesame & ginger, Peruvian spices dry rub, smoked yellow curry (to name a few), your tastebuds will never have a dull moment. Perfect pairing alert: maple mustard wings with a Starr Hill Last Leaf brown ale.

Badger on Main

1118 Main Street

It’s time to bring on a world of heat! If your motto is “the hotter, the better” then you should check out the wings at Badger on Main. Work your way through sauces like spicy bbq, spicy Thai, and habanero dragon until you reach DEATHLY EVIL (bwahaha). If you are a dry-heat fan, jump on the ghost pepper rub to light your mouth on fire. Calm it down with a bowl of fries covered in beer cheese or a fried oreo as a reward.

Market at Main

904 Main Street

Okay, we admit that Market at Main isn’t known for having a wall of tv’s, but their wing game is still strong. So, if football is a high priority, grab your wings to-go. Otherwise, slow it on down to enjoy your wings (6 for $6.99 / 12 for $10.99). The house-made barbecue sauce is the perfect topping for these traditional breaded wings.

IMG_0908.JPG

The Water Dog

1116 Jefferson Street

The Water Dog does NOT mess around here. They brine all of their wings in pickle juice before frying. Plus, all of their rubs, sauces, and even their pickles are hand-crafted in-house. If you are on the fence about how to order your riverside wings (one pound for $11), let us steer you to the java jerk - this complex rub crafted with coffee will deliver a slight sweetness and subtle kick.

The Depot Grille

Arriving in orders of 10 or 20, we are strong supporters of the bone-in wings from The Depot Grille. However, if you want the same kick with a bit more meat, you cannot go wrong with their famous chicken tenders in buffalo style. They might be listed as a “lite bite” but we swear there’s enough for two.

Barb’s Dream Hut

1219 Main Street (inside the Lynchburg Community Market)

IYKYK. Open Tuesday through Saturday until 2pm, you’d better not sleep on the crispy wings from Barb’s Dream Hut. To be honest, everything tastes better when she puts her loving touch on it.

Sweet, spicy, or tangy - no matter how you like your wings, you can find them downtown . Be sure to share your favorite flavor with us by tagging @downtownlynchburg.

Get In the Zone

No, we aren’t talking about AutoZone. We’re referring to something much more familiar - Downtown construction. Let’s be honest, no one likes a sea of orange cones, but the end result is going to be amazing. Just imagine the beautiful sidewalks lined with new plants and trees. Not to mention upgraded water and sewer lines that AREN’T LITERALLY 100 years old.

So, while we wait for all of this hard work to wrap up, we need YOU to do us a solid. Follow those detour signs to a nearby parking spot and take a visit to one (or more) of the businesses located in the construction zone. After all, by avoiding construction, you avoid supporting a small business when they need you the most.

Retail

Come shop around - there’s a little bit of everything. Find great new and old (we’re talking beautiful antiques) houseware items, buy something to make yourself feel pretty, or even grab a sick new skateboard deck.

Restaurants & breweries

There’s SO MUCH that can be said about the delicious options available in the construction zone. But rather than talking on and on, we will leave you with this food & drink haiku:

Seafood, Philippine
Beer, small plates, caffeine
So much great cuisine

spa & hair Services

Ladies and gentlemen in need of cuts, color, waxing, facial, and cosmetic services – you are in luck. One of the many providers in the construction zone will surely have what you are looking for.

Getting around

Trying to follow detour signs can be confusing at times. Get prepared with our list of tips below and be sure to reference the map at the bottom of the page.

When heading eastbound from Church - You should be prepared to drive straight through the 12th Street intersection passing the YMCA, take a left onto Pearl Street, and then another left onto Main Street. From there you can:

  1. Park in the Crossroads Lot at Main & Commerce (free two-hour parking on weekdays).

  2. Head down Commerce Street to access Main from 11th Street.

  3. Check to see if there is any on-street or Lynchburg Community Market parking in the “local traffic only” portion of Main. Just remember that you will have to turn back the way you came if you don’t find any open spots.

Specific Businesses - If it were US in your shoes, this is where WE would park…

  • Scene 3 - ON Eleventh Street (approaching from Commerce) or in the City Center Deck and walk just about one block.

  • Main Street Sports Bar (1100 Block of Main) - IN their parking lot which can still be accessed from 12th Street by turning left at the light on Church Street.

  • Estates & Consignments (12th Street) - IN the 12th Street Lot that is free on nights and weekends.

  • Lynchburg Community Market et al (1200 Block of Main) - IN the Crossroads Lot and walk the one block in order to avoid congestion that might occur when looking for an on-street space. But, hey, we’re just trying to avoid that drama.

  • Starr Hill or Estates Revisited (1300 Block of Main) - IN FRONT of those businesses by looping around Commerce Street to 13th Street and turning left back onto Main. And if that doesn’t work, just turn left at the stoplight and park in the Crossroads Lot.

Don’t forget that Main Street is TWO WAY! What we are trying to say is that you could approach Downtown Lynchburg from 5th Street, turn eastbound onto Main Street, and drive all the way to 11th Street. On this route, you pass the Midtown Parking Deck (between 9th and 10th) and the City Center Deck (between 10th and 11th). Both of these parking lots offer free two-hour parking during the week days!

Arrival Pad Parking Map-01.png

The moral of the story is DON’T BE SCARED. Just take your time, don’t get frustrated, and take satisfaction in supporting small business. We promise, it will be over soon – and if you need some more convincing of how incredible Downtown Lynchburg has become, check out this exciting new video!

MEET THE ARTISTS BEHIND ART ALLEY

Like the rest of the Downtown Lynchburg community, we are eagerly awaiting the grand opening of Art Alley this fall. Now, before we reveal what these beautiful murals and art galleries will look like, we want to introduce you to the fantastic artists behind the work. The art that they’ve created for this space is truly breathtaking and we know that it will put a smile on your faces. Seriously, you guys, we can hardly contain our excitement. Fortunately, September will fly by and our opening day will be here in no time.

Below you will read more about what inspires these artists, what some of their favorite past works are, and a hint of what you can expect at Art Alley. Enjoy!

Alleyway Murals

Emily Herr

Check out my website!

“My approach to murals is informed by a formal illustration & design education from VCU's renowned School of the Arts, as well as 9 years of mural painting experience.

My life and art practice center around the belief that you should embrace your space, and I aim to provide the creative facilitation you need to do just that. Each project is a unique adventure that deserves to be treated as such.”

Christina Davis

When describing her mural Make Waves, Davis says, "I think a lot of people are trying to find their voice and sometimes you just need a little bit of inspiration and an extra push that it’s okay to be doing that".

Christina creates art that is meant to inspire and uplift others and she hopes to provide that feeling when the community admires her Art Alley mural.

[excerpt from 2020 WSET article]

Lisa Jonas

“I tend to be drawn towards more organic shapes. If something inspires me, I’ll borrow from it. You see a lot of art, you feel a lot of art, and sometimes things come to you.

Even with my pottery, I like to do etching on it, because it draws in the basic, organic shapes that I tend to be drawn to…It’s not always in my head, sometimes it just comes as it comes.  I don’t see a full picture necessarily, I just feel it out.”

Deidre Stone

Check out my website!

“Most of the inspiration for my art is drawn from nature. Desert sunsets and beach sunrises, celestial bodies and the expanse above, lush mountainsides and fields of wildflowers, and all of the beauty of flora and fauna that surrounds us.

I create and share my visual art through painting, drawing, and metalsmithing. I believe that art is an extension of ourselves and comes in many forms and we all have the capacity to share that with the world if we so choose.”

Spark Joy Gallery

In addition to an incredible asphalt mural and multiple vibrant wall murals along Art Alley, we are so excited to bring an outdoor rotating gallery to the community – displaying illustrations from 10 different Central Virginia artists. Read more about these artists below and make sure you come to see their work in person this fall!

4.png

Angus Carter

“I am inspired by everything! I tend to just let the world at large sweep over me like a wave at the sea, taking in bits of information and joy as they hit me. I rarely seek out specific styles or genres for inspiration but like just having it come randomly in spurts of inspiration and beauty.”

3.png

Ella Morrison

Check out my website!

“[My inspiration is] anything and everything that sparks joy and excitement to my inner child... but mainly my cat, Mochi. I started pursuing illustration and design in 2017, but I have loved art my entire life.”

1.png

Kate Mitchell

Check out my website!

“I would describe my style as simple and clean with warm tones and some minimalistic tendencies. I love to use small details to focus the message of my pieces while still keeping the designs simple and bright for something that catches the eyes of the viewer and communicates clearly.

My inspiration comes from the people, the stories, and the places that I have had the blessing to know and see.”

Untitled design-4.png

Meg Weston

“I've made art my whole life and went on to study art at Randolph College, which heavily focused on drawing and painting. I make the art I want to see. If there's something that gets in my head and I have to get it out on paper. I love using color. Hands are a common theme in my work and sketchbooks. Using actions with your hands and can communicate words and emotions just as well as with your face.”

5.png

Russ Voelker

Check out my website!

“I try hard not to have a ‘style.’ I paint what I feel, and in a ‘style’ I feel at the moment, the style is often predicated by the subject I choose to paint…but not always. I sometimes do realism one week and abstract the next.”

Untitled design (2).png

Emily Stilwell

Visit my website!

“I describe my style as soft, whimsical, and earthy. I got my start as an artist by filling up all the margins in my school work with doodles and sketches until someone suggested that I should probably join the school's art club.”

2.png

Deliece Blanchard

Check out my website!

“I frequently paint outside. I try to capture the light in a landscape, and I paint ‘unblended’ strokes of color. I spend a lot of time mixing colors before I paint.

I am grateful for the opportunity I’ve had to be a fellow at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, where I met and found inspiration from many hard working artists.”

7.png

Hanan Davis

“I am often inspired by the environment around me, when I look at something and want to transfer it into an art piece. I am also inspired by public artists, and their ability to transform an environment.”

Meg Davies

Check out my website!

“Being an artist is one of the largest parts of who I am, and always has been.  My creativity has been encouraged since the beginning - whether it be from teachers, family, or friends - and led to the start of my business in 2018.  Expressing myself through art is a must in my life, and living within a community that supports it and shares it with me is invaluable.”

6.png

Morgaine Godwin

“I am constantly inspired by the creativity of others and their courage to share their work on the various social platforms.

Coming out of a year that has been so difficult for many, I wanted to create something that offered a bright and positive feeling for those who see it.”

9.png

Summer Raulerson

“As an artist my main source of inspiration is my great-grandmother and mentor, Margaret Blankenship. She was also an artist and was the only person who fed me as an artist.

As for ‘My World,’ I took my inspiration from Downtown Lynchburg itself, as you can see the buildings in the background. In the spring it is filled with the most beautiful blossoms, and the girl holds a cup of tea (literally what I live off of) and the sky is from my dreams.”

DLA Staff Contributions

James Ford

Marketing Coordinator

In addition to crafting the content you love on reels, social posts, and emails, James put his graphics talent to work by creating patterns that pay homage to the grandeur of art deco buildings in Downtown Lynchburg: The Virginian, the Carter Glass Building, and the Allied Arts Building. These designs in black and white have been meticulously applied to power boxes flanking either side of Art Alley.

IMG_0274.jpg

Susan Brown

Program Director

Susan put much time, effort, and brute force in curating the exhibit known as Art Alley. In the months leading up to installation, she hand-crafted the 8 and 10 inch epoxy resin discs that hang overhead. This piece was designed with the intent to add color and movement to the space - which is displayed in the quiet rotation above and the reflected light that dances across the street below.

Are you as inspired as we are? Maybe your work will be seen displayed in Downtown Lynchburg one day! Stay tuned for an official save the date announcement and spread the word as we gear up to open Art Alley for the community to enjoy.

Mouth-Watering Meals & Stellar Views – Here's Your July 2nd Fireworks Guide

Fireworks! Eeeeeeee!!!! We are so excited to be able to bring Independence Day fireworks back to Downtown Lynchburg this year (thanks to the generous support of BWXT). We can’t wait to see you out at this exciting event on July 2, 2021 (the perfect start to your holiday weekend)! The best part is that the Hill City will surprise you with many unexpected vantage points all around. Is this your first time hearing of this event? Head here to learn more info about views, parking, and more.

Before we tell you where to watch, we’re going to let you in on our very scientific method for determining the best views:

  1. We estimated the launch location along Riversedge Park in Amherst County (launch site closed for your safety).

  2. We used Google maps to determine the height of the cliff and add the average height of a Virginia tree to gauge the top of the tree line.

  3. We spruced up a photo with our best Bitmoji (create yours here) talents and compared everywhere from 5th Street to the expressway!

We do know that the display will skew closer to the east end of Riverfront Park and that even if you think you have a super view, trees and buildings have the potential to obstruct your view.

But no matter where you land for the 20-minute display, the best part of your night will be spending the evening downtown with all of your lovely friends and family.

PERFECT PAIRINGS

(mix and match as you please)

MayLynn’s Creamery & Riverfront Park

Riverfront Park is our #1 top spot if you want a front-and-center style event. Bring a blanket and a picnic (no alcohol, please), while you enjoy a little bit of background music from the DLA team. This will be a prime spot for families and we envision quite a few kids running barefoot in the grass, so we ask that this space stay pet-free. What better way to cool down on a hot day than with some MayLynn’s. Not only will they be serving up the classics like soft-serve from their shop, but they will be launching a new line of popsicles sold right in the park!

IMG_5451.jpg
AUG_-7.jpg

The Water Dog & TWD Beer Garden

Hot dogs and hamburgers – it’s like a cookout without having to scrape the grill (plus great service and quality ingredients). If you’re looking to grab a bite to eat, see the hostess to be seated then when you’re finished head over to TWD Beer Garden (formally known as the Riverfront Park Splash Pad). Out there you can buy a round of cold canned beverages and mingle with your friends. Space is limited to standing room only, so leave your folding chairs at home.

T.C. Trotters & A Downtown AirBnB

We’re just as surprised as you to see AirBnB’s with some pretty spectacular views of the river still available on July 2, whether from a window or private terrace. If you are lucky enough to snag one before they sell out, stop by T.C. Trotters for a bottle of Moose Mix ahead of check-in. We’re not joking when we say this is an AMAZING bloody Mary (or Maria) mix that you can enjoy that evening or put in the fridge for quick relief on Saturday morning. With extended hours until 9pm that night, Lonnie and Moose are excited to meet you and serve up samples of cuisine made with Moose Mix. Liquor sold separately - the Downtown ABC Store is open until 10pm!

The Latin Place & Takeout Patio at the Grove

If you think that eating anything other than grilled meat while celebrating Independence Day is non-American, boy do we have news for you. Trust us when we say that POTATOES + MEAT + CHEESE in a melting pot of flavors is what you need. Yeah, papas locas from The Latin Place is a taste of Puerto Rico (shoutout to the U.S. Territory) right here in Lynchburg. Grab your food to-go and head across the street to the Takeout Patio at the Grove, installed next to Depot Grille in 2020. Plus, you can work off some of those carbs by playing a vigorous round of table tennis.

Waterstone Pizza & The Craddock Terry Lawn

What’s round, fire-roasted, and comes in an extremely portable box? You guessed it – a delicious Waterstone pizza. You can’t go wrong with a classic Margherita but we’d also like to draw your attention to the giant pretzel sticks (also convenient for walking and noshing)? Head upstairs to the pergola next to Shoemakers or the green space with the LOVE shoe closer to Commerce.

Philippine Delight & Takeout Patio on the Bluffwalk

It’s meat…on a stick (and it’s darn good, too). What’s even better is that Philippine Delight is offering kabob specials (10 for $29.99 or 20 for $49.99) and family four-packs (pansit or lo mein, 8 chicken or pork kabobs, and 4 egg rolls or lo lumpia for $39.95). Call (434) 548-0600 to order and pay by June 26 for an extra discount. Then, you just have to pick up your food and walk down to the Takeout Patio on the Bluffwalk.

Market at Main & Midtown Parking Deck

Market at Main – it feels like home, right? So, just go ahead and settle in for a course of comfort food. Perhaps you’ll share apps like fried green tomatoes and okra-wood or head right for the Percival’s pimento sandwich. When you’re done, head out back to the Midtown Parking Deck for a view of the show. The deck will be pedestrian-friendly as Main Street will be closed due to construction. If we have to guess, this would be a less crowded alternative if you are still hesitant to be around lots of people.

Benny Scarpetta’s & The City Center Parking Deck (drive-in style)

We embraced a lot of traditions last year. Sure, we’re (mostly) all back to brushing our hair and putting on pants but that doesn’t mean that we have to give up staying in our own comfort zones. Yep, I’m talking about our cars. If you can watch a movie from your front seat, you can also watch fireworks with the radio on and the a.c. blasting. And if you’re the type of person who doesn’t mind eating in your ride, pop in across the street to grab an enormous slice of Benny’s pizza and a soda.

ALL IN ONE EXPERIENCES

(Please check with the individual restaurants for details on reservations and/or ticket requirements)

{RA} Bistro

Funnel cake sliders. Let’s repeat that, but louder. FUNNEL CAKE SLIDERS. Yeah, that’s a chargrilled bacon & onion relish topped cheeseburger dipped in funnel cake batter, flash-fried, and dusted with powdered sugar. Served up with raspberry pepper jelly and a back-patio view.

Screen Shot 2021-06-17 at 1.23.39 PM.png

No 7 Rooftop Bar

This may very well be the best view in town. Not only is it practically eye-to-eye with the fireworks, but there is a prime people-watching opportunity along the perimeter glass bar top (but you didn’t get that idea from us 🤐). Grab a Cirrus Summer Fling cocktail and enjoy the bird’s eye view.

Fratelli Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar

Anyone else dreaming of a charcuterie board and a glass of white wine on the Bluffwalk? Surely it can’t be just us. Enjoy your dinner this evening from one of Downtown Lynchburg’s newest and most exciting restaurants. On second thought, add some bruschetta and make it a bottle - sharing is caring!

Bootleggers

When we say Bootleggers, you probably think whisky, right? Maybe big burgers and kick-ass onion rings are a close second and third. But have you seen the options to satiate your sweet tooth?!? We’re talking fried oreos and boozy milk shakes to say the least. You’re welcome.

Depot Grille

For fear of sounding like a broken record, get the chicken tenders. We’ve said it before they’re JUST. SO. GOOD. Get them plain or tossed in buffalo sauce for an extra kick. Be sure to order that house-made ranch for dipping. Plus, they’re still operating on the kush extended patio setup for some outdoor vibes.

Tips for a successful evening

  1. Read our FAQ’s. You have questions and we have answers (scroll down to the bottom). Can I bring pets? Where do I park? Will there be restrooms? If you don’t see what you’re looking for - you can always reach out to us at info@downtownlynchburg.com.

  2. Head Downtown early. Let’s be real. You aren’t going to find a quick parking spot at 9:05pm. So, head on down after work and spend the evening around town. What is there to do, you say? Well, you could:

    • Eat (that should have been pretty obvious).

    • Go on a bike ride - rent one from Bikes Unlimited.

    • Visit an art gallery - it’s First Friday after all.

    • Shop - some of our retailers are staying open late just to see you (click here to see who). Don’t disappoint them!

  3. Have a backup plan. It never hurts to plan ahead. We want you to have the best night ever, but that has different definitions for everyone.

  4. Please be patient. It’s been a while since we’ve all collectively had to have people skills and staffing shortages are a real thing. There may be lines. There may be mistakes. Let’s be kind and understanding.

Are there other great spots to see the show? 🤷 Probably…you might even find some luck standing on the sidewalk in the right intersection at the right time. We’ll leave that for you to discover! When you do, be sure to tag us @downtownlynchburg and use #downtownlynchburg when you share your photos.

HOT VAX SUMMER: OUTDOOR FUN IN DOWNTOWN LYNCHBURG

TIPS & TRICKS TO ENJOY YOUR SUMMER IN DOWNTOWN LYNCHBURG

As the weather continues to warm up, there are more than just a few activities to do in Downtown Lynchburg. From taking a bike ride to walking on the trails to enjoying live music, we have a long list of things to keep you busy all summer long. Here are some things to plan for if you love to be in that hot VA heat.

WALK, BIKE, BOARD, OR SCOOT

THE BLUFFWALK

A quick stroll along the Bluffwalk will give you overlook views of the James. Why not pick up some takeout from one of your favorite restaurants and take advantage of one of our three Takeout Patios located under the pergola by the Water Bearer. And if you want that dine-in experience, make a dinner reservation at Fratelli to sit under their lighted pergola while enjoying fine Italian dining.

THE TRAILS

If you aren’t utilizing the Blackwater Creek Trail and Riverwalk Trail, you are sorely missing out. With beautiful landscapes , river and creek views, plenty of shaded sections, and wide paved pathways perfect for sharing, this is a great place to take a walk, run, or ride with your friends and family. Read below to see how to utilize this gem of our city.

  • One of the downtown entrances of the Blackwater Creek Trail is at Jefferson and 8th streets, right behind Amazement Square and by the Rotary Centennial Riverfront Skatepark. A staff favorite, this trail has the option to take you on a loop that starts creekside through a tunnel to cool down, and ends up right back where you started. You can refer to this map to plot your course.

  • The Riverwalk Trail, otherwise known as Percival’s Island, is another great place to enjoy the beautiful nature of our downtown. The iconic bridge with the gorgeous view of the James River and our beloved Downtown leads straight to a natural area with wheelchair-accessible paved trails and plenty of benches to stop along the way.

  • Not in the mood to be on foot? Stop by Bikes Unlimited (which is conveniently located right off of the Riverwalk Trail) to rent a bike for yourself and your family!

RIVERFRONT PARK

This wide-open green expanse that is Riverfront Park is the perfect place to throw a frisbee with friends (furry and non-furry), have a romantic picnic, or play some croquet (why does no one play croquet anymore??). It’s also a perfect spot to let the kids run around and get out all of that summer-time energy. With The Water Dog, MayLynn’s Creamery, and Reserve Wine Tasting Room & Lounge just a stone’s throw away, you can start and finish your visit to the park with a delicious brew and food, ice cream cone, or glass of wine. Plenty of other amazing restaurants are close by, so check out the full list here.

MONUMENT TERRACE

For those looking to burn some calories, the Monument Terrace stairs are sure to get that heart rate up. This landmark also has a gorgeous view of downtown at the very top. Another great way to get from Church Street up to Court Street to see that lovely view is the Lynchburg Public Elevator located in the parking lot right across from City Hall.

ROTARY CENTENNIAL RIVERFRONT SKATEPARK

Complete with a new half pipe, the Rotary Centennial Riverfront Skatepark also offers a street course and bowl with vibrant community art. Skateboard need a tune-up? Scene3 has got your back!

EVERYWHERE DOWNTOWN

There’s a reason why we call it the “Hill City”. We love walking around Downtown street to street, but the hills can be a bit brutal. With the recent appearance of the BIRD Scooters all around downtown, you can grab one, ride it to your desired location, and leave it.

DINE OUTSIDE

Speaking of takeout, our Takeout Patios are a great spot to enjoy your favorite grub, but there are also numerous places to dine outside in Downtown Lynchburg.

TAKEOUT PATIOS

We mentioned this above, but we are super proud of the takeout patios we created in 2020. Don’t forget to grab your favorite takeout before heading down to one of our 4 spots around downtown.

Takeout Patio at the Grove- nestled in between Depot Grille and the Riverfront Parking lot is a lovely little birch grove with colorful tables and just enough shade to enjoy a relaxing meal. (wheelchair accessible)

Takeout Patio at the Market- in the Lynchburg Community Market parking lot you’ll find our most recent takeout patio complete with our signature colorful tables and bistro lights overhead. (wheelchair accessible)

Takeout Patio at the Bluffwalk- right next to the Water Bearer statue and overlooking Jefferson Street is our original takeout patio under a lighted pergola - great for those late-night dinners. (wheelchair accessible ramp located at 12th and Commerce)

Donna Park on Church Street - situated at the corner of Church and 11th is our pocket park. Great for that quick break with a large sail shade to keep you cool. (wheelchair accessible)

DRINK OUTSIDE

PINTS AFTER PEDALS

Exercise with a reward at the end? Yes, please! Bikes Unlimited and The Glass House are a match made in heaven with their Pints After Pedals weekly event. Every Tuesday, you can get a FREE bike and helmet rental from Bikes Unlimited (first come first served), take an hour-long ride on the trail, and then end your evening at The Glass House with drinks and $12 delicious shareable (or not) small plates. This event is family-friendly, all skill levels, and open to the public.

ROSÉ THURSDAY

Rosé, live music, small plates, friends….we LOVE Rosé Thursday. Buy your rosé by the bottle or the glass, but remember that a portion of the proceeds of each bottle purchased goes towards a local charity. We aren’t saying you HAVE to buy the bottle, but it’s for charity, right?!

THREE ROADS BREWERY

The deck at Three Roads Brewery is a great spot to enjoy a relaxing brew at the end of your work day or on the weekend. And on Sundays, there’s even a market with local artisans to peruse in the parking lot.

RESERVE WINE TASTING ROOM & LOUNGE

Reserve Wine Tasting Room & Lounge has such a great spot on Jefferson Street. You can make a reservation to sit in the shade under one of their tents to taste some of the many amazing wines that Virginia has to offer.

Market.jpg

SHOP OUTSIDE

‘Tis the season for delicious and vibrant produce at the Lynchburg Community Market. The bounty that Virginia summer and soil gives us during these next few months is incomparable. Plan to get to the market early to get your haul, pop inside to grab some breakfast, and take advantage of our Takeout Patio.

IMG_2548.jpg

ENJOY LIVE MUSIC

SUNSET ON 7TH

The Academy Center of the Arts is bringing us some great live music in the Pacific Life parking lot. The next event is on June 19 featuring Joslyn & The Sweet Compression. If you’ve been missing that live concert feel, this is for you!

WATERSTONE PIZZA

Waterstone Pizza has great line-ups of live music every weekend on their back lawn. Enjoy their delicious fire-roasted pizza, corn hole, giant chess, and drinks with friends, all while listening to some amazing local musicians.

As you can see, there are plenty of things to enjoy outside while in Downtown Lynchburg, and we suspect more things are on the horizon. Make sure to follow all of these great businesses on social media so you can keep up with what is happening downtown. Oh, and you’ll want to follow us on Instagram and Facebook as well, because we might just have something up our sleeve that we think you will be very excited about. So, stay tuned, and go GET OUTSIDE!

CALL FOR ARTISTS

CALL FOR ARTISTS

Art Alley Outdoor Gallery 2021

Downtown Lynchburg Association (DLA) is a non-profit organization that strives to create a strong, vibrant, and welcoming downtown with a unique and historic character. DLA is currently working to launch a beautification project known as Art Alley, which will take an underutilized alley/road (11th Street at Commerce) and transform it into a place to showcase public art. This project will include an outdoor gallery which gives local artists the opportunity to create unique, inspiring artwork that can end up publicly displayed on the Bluffwalk, helping to transform Downtown into a more vibrant, creative, welcoming and beautiful environment for the whole community.

The outdoor gallery will be regularly refreshed (annually) with the artworks of up to 8 local artists ranging from high school students to professional creatives. Art pieces will be digitized, transferred into vinyl decals, installed on panels, and attached to the building located at 57 11th Street. Artists whose piece has been selected to be displayed downtown will receive an award package and honorarium of $400.

Judging Criteria

  • Artwork enhances the environment and has aesthetic quality - is dynamic and makes people stop and look.

  • Content is appropriate for all ages and respectful to all communities.

  • Content is not political, commercial or religious.

  • Content should spark joy in the viewer.

General Timeline

  • Artwork will remain the property of the artist, however, each program participant must sign and return an Artist Contract.

Sourcing Staples at Locally-Owned Businesses

Creative Ways to Stock your Shelves From Downtown Businesses

You’ve heard it before and will hear it again: shopping local is super important. By shopping local, you directly boost your city’s economy, help nurture your community and help conserve energy (just to name a few big ones). Take it from us - it’s truly so much more and you can’t even begin to understand the amazing warm fuzzies that these business owners get when you choose to spend your money with them.

But we aren’t just talking about special-occasion gifts or a growler fill of craft brew. Join us as our very own Deidre Stone heads out on an adventure to shop for groceries Downtown. You might just be surprised to see how her unique shopping trip provided everything she needed for some delicious, locally-purchased meals!

Hi everyone! Deidre here….

In case you don’t know me, I am the Administrative Coordinator at DLA and I love Downtown Lynchburg. There are many reasons why I do, but one of the most special parts of Lynchburg to me is the community. I love the fact that I’ve been able to get to know local business owners and truly become friends with many of them. I, myself, have a small business and so does my partner (you’ll see a shameless plug for his business down below). We have so many amazing and supportive people keeping our businesses going and it is extremely important to both of us that we shop local at any and all opportunities. And that includes food. About 75% of the food we eat, we source locally. So, when the opportunity was presented to me to show folks how to stock their shelves by shopping solely Downtown, I jumped at the chance. Follow along with me as I share a few recipes and show you how you can stock your shelves (and fridge) JUST by shopping in Downtown Lynchburg.

4 Recipes to make using locally sourced food

2021-03-08 19.02.03.jpg

VEGAN CRISPY POTATO TACOS

For a super quick and easy meal using some leftovers, look no further. We had some leftover tawa paratha and mango chutney which are both vegan and made in-house at Hot & Cold cafe. We hate wasting leftovers, so we got creative. These tacos are quick, healthy, vegan, and oh so satisfying.

Feeds 2; Cook time: 20 minutes

Ingredients:

Step 1: Cut your potatoes into small bite-size pieces. Heat oil in a pan over medium-high heat and fry your potatoes stirring occasionally to keep from burning. Cook until your desired tenderness and crispiness is achieved. About 10-15 minutes.

Step 2: Chop up your purple cabbage into small pieces. Mix in mango chutney and spring onions to taste. Season to taste with salt and pepper or your favorite spice.

Step 3. Warm-up your tawa and load it up with potatoes and your cabbage slaw. We also added some spinach and squeezed some fresh lemon over top. Bon appetit!

APPLE CIDER CHICKEN

This meal is comforting and simple. The apple cider and apples caramelize to make this dish feel very decadent. Especially combined with the salad recipe below, and some fresh bread from Father’s Cafe dipped in Kelly’s Persian Foods za’atar chutney. This is a perfect meal to indulge in.

Feeds 2; Cook time: 30-45 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb chicken breast (we purchased ours from Restoration Acres Farm)

  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

  • salt, pepper, and we always use Stone Spice Co since we make it!

  • 2 medium-sized apples sliced thick (I used one Pink Lady and one Winesap from Hungry Hill Farms but you can use your favorite variety)

  • 1/4 cup onion (we purchased ours from Thistle Ridge Farm)

  • 12oz apple cider (did you know Mama Crockett’s sells fresh apple cider in 12 oz and 1/2 gallon sizes? Score.)

  • 1 tablespoon of butter (the only butter we ever eat is from Crooked Creek Farms - seriously store-bought butter is just bland to me now)

Step 1: In a skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium-high heat. Season both sides of the chicken with salt and pepper. Add chicken and cook 3-5 min each side until browned, flipping once. Remove the chicken from the skillet and set aside.

Step 2: Reduce the heat to medium, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil, butter, onions, apples, and 2 teaspoons (or to taste) of Stone Spice Company Buzzin’ BBQT (can be purchased at Gilded). Cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft. Add 1 cup of apple cider and bring to a simmer-about 3 minutes.

Step 3: Add chicken and any juices back to skillet. Also, add the remaining apple cider. Adjust the heat to maintain a simmer and cook until the internal temperature of chicken is 165 degrees (about 3-4 minutes).

Step 4: Enjoy your locally sourced creation!

ROASTED VEGGIE SALAD

I was very excited when I saw spinach and kale at the market this past weekend so making a delicious warm salad was a must. Simple and nutritious with a quick homemade dressing, even picky eaters will approve.

Feeds 2; Cook time- 1 hour 30 minutes

Ingredients: (all veggies purchased at Thistle Ridge Farm)

  • 1 handful of kale (stems removed)

  • 2 handfuls of spinach

  • 2 small beets cut into one-inch pieces

  • 2 small purple sweet potatoes cut into one-inch pieces (that’s what they had this week – regular sweet potatoes would be great too)

Note: Any roasted veggies would be great. Play around with your favorites.

  • 4 tablespoons olive oil

  • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

  • 1 teaspoon honey (purchased from Hungry Hill Farms)

  • 2 teaspoons Stone Spice Co Buzzin’ BBQT

Step 1: Toss your cut veggies in 2 tablespoons of olive oil and 1 teaspoon of Buzzin’ BBQT. Roast in a dish or on a baking sheet at 375 degrees for 45 minutes-1 hour depending on your desired tenderness. Stirring occasionally while roasting.

Step 2: While your veggies are roasting, clean your kale and spinach and lay out to dry.

Step 3: To prepare your dressing, mix 2 tablespoons of olive oil, 2 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar, 1 teaspoon of honey, and 1 teaspoon of Buzzin’ BBQT. I put this all in a small to-go container and shake it up really well.

Step 4: Once your kale and spinach are dry, mix in the dressing. I like to use my hands to massage the dressing into the greens really well. Once your veggies are done roasting, mix them in. I actually prefer this salad a bit warm. If you are not into that, just wait for the veggies to cool.

LOCAVORE SPRITZER

To top off the recipes, I had to share a quick local cocktail. Bright and bubbly and just right. If alcohol isn’t your thing, just swap out the champagne for seltzer water (you can snag a Perrier at Market at Main in their to-go section).

Ingredients:

Step 1: Pull out your favorite cocktail glass. Pour in your bubbly. Then add the rose syrup and give it all a little stir. Garnish however you’d like with apples.

Step 2: Enjoy and repeat step one as many times as you’d like-but please do so responsibly:)

I hope that this has encouraged you to start looking for some staples to stock your shelves in Downtown Lynchburg.

I can guarantee you, your food will taste better and the satisfaction you get knowing you’re supporting so many small businesses and farmers is unmatched. Now get out there and enjoy ALL Downtown Lynchburg has to offer!

XOXO,

Deidre

A Day Downtown with Tess Ritchie

Tess Ritchie - 6BFF616F-D751-41A1-B77A-4166E5C9728A.jpeg

Hi! I’m Tess Ritchie. I am a Sophomore at Liberty University from Charlotte, North Carolina. I’m so thankful to the Downtown Lynchburg Association for letting me take you guys with me throughout my day in Downtown Lynchburg with their Downtown Lynchburg Gift Card. My friend, Faith West, who is a local photographer, spent the day with me and took all of the pictures throughout our day downtown.

A nice thing about the Downtown Lynchburg Gift Card is that you can track your balance on your receipt (it shows up as ##x## right next to the Authorization Code) after you buy something, so it is super easy to know how much money you have left! You can also check your balance online.

The White Hart Cafe

Gift Card Purchase: $9.00

The first place we went to on our day downtown was The White Hart Cafe! This is my favorite coffee shop in Lynchburg because of its calm atmosphere and kind employees which makes it perfect for studying. I used my Downtown Lynchburg Gift Card and got an iced chai latte with vanilla and a cookie. The White Hart has lots of seating options which is something that I look for when finding a coffee shop I love. This is a great place to go to with your friends or if you need a place to get a lot of homework done.

Live Trendy or Die

Gift Card Purchase: $48.44

The next place we visited was Live Trendy or Die. This boutique is by far my favorite store downtown! They have so many cute clothes and accessories all at an affordable price. While I went throughout the store, I found so many adorable things and it was hard to not try on everything. I ended up getting a perfect white dress that looks just like a dress that I have been wanting forever- but this one was half the price! This store also has a section of vintage clothes which I love because you can find something that no one else has!

Gilded

Gift Card Purchase: $10.11

Next, we stopped by Gilded which is right next door to Live Trendy or Die. They sell cards, candles, and so many cute little things that you can use whether it be for school, work, or even around the house. With so much to look at, you can spend forever browsing. There are lots of things that you won’t see at first glance, including some dainty necklaces and earrings that would match any outfit! While I was in Gilded, I found a small notebook that is easy to carry which is exactly what I was looking for! Another great thing about Gilded is that THEY SELL Downtown Lynchburg Gift Cards. Whether it’s for yourself or for a friend, the Downtown Lynchburg Gift Card is the perfect gift for anyone!

Ayven Avenue

NOW ACCEPTING DOWNTOWN LYNCHBURG GIFT CARDS

Ayven Avenue Boutique was the next stop on our list. Faith has been telling me to go for so long because she’s so obsessed with the store! A thing I really liked about this store is how they’ve decorated. It’s in an old house and the back wall is a huge mirror, so it is really easy to see what clothes would look like on you. They have so many cute clothes and accessories, but I would have to say my favorite thing about this boutique would have to be the shoes! They have so many choices and they are all so cute and unlike any that you would be able to find at the mall.

RiverWalk Trail

Right before dinner we decided to go to the RiverWalk Trail to take some pictures. This is such a pretty area, and it is the perfect scenic place to spend time with your friends or go on a picnic. It’s also a great place to take pictures whether it’s raining like it was on the day we went or if it’s sunny! With so many amazing places nearby like Riverfront Park, Dublin 3 Coffeehouse, MayLynn’s Creamery, and The Depot Grille (which is where we went next), it’s the perfect location.

The Depot Grille

Gift Card Purchase: $24.07

The Depot Grille is the best place to go for dinner because it has such a comfortable atmosphere and the staff there is amazing. Our waiter and waitress were both so nice and made our time there even better. We got cheese fries as an appetizer which were absolutely delicious and I highly recommend them! For our meals, Faith got the Southwest Salad, and I got the Pretzel Club Sandwich. We loved our meals! We weren’t planning on getting dessert, but our awesome waiter talked us into getting the Brownie Sundae. He didn’t lie when he said it was delicious. Overall, The Depot is the perfect place to go, especially with big groups, because they have such a variety of food on their menu which will make everyone happy.

I had the best day downtown with Faith and I am happy I could take you guys with me! A huge thank you to the Downtown Lynchburg Association for giving me the opportunity to do this! I highly recommend buying Downtown Lynchburg Gift Cards for friends or family. You can see and do so many things with it!

Getting Crafty in Downtown Lynchburg

While we are pumped to leave 2020 behind, we all know that January can get a bit cold and gloomy. We might even get - dare we say it- SNOWED IN. ❄️

So, while you are stuck at home making soups and bread, consider upping your craft game. You might be surprised at the artistic offerings in Downtown Lynchburg.

What to get: ANYTHING in the store

The Art Box is your number one stop for your creative needs. They have supplies for the painter, the potter, the sketcher, the writer, the bookmaker, and everything in between (really).

But don’t fret, you don’t have to be a professional to shop here. The exceptional staff are all artists themselves and are happy to connect beginners with the right tools for whatever project they are undertaking!

What to get: feathers

Barred marabou blood quills. Stripped goose biots. Peacock swords. They're not just fun names to say – they are beautiful feathers. Sure, they are intended to be turned into some pretty wicked flies for catching fish (you can still do that by following along with the TaleTellers blog).

We envision projects for the home like festive votive holders or chic wall hangings, and advanced crafters have hours of jewelry-making in their future!

What to get: Alpaca wool

It’s a knitter’s dream! Take your pick from a wall of wool in the back of Spearman Artisanry and start all of those scarves, hats, and blankets that are on your list.

But, why buy alpaca wool? Well, it is natural, biodegradable, moisture-wicking, windproof, durable, stain-resistant, and allows the perfect body temperature. Boom!

What to get: Flowers, flowers, and more flowers

The Hip Tulip is your wildflower florist, and while they are happy to customize an arrangement, you can also choose from individual stems for your next craft.

Maybe you want to feel like a pretty, pretty princess with a DIY flower crown. Or, you can dry them out to make scrapbooking crafts or press them into frames.

What to get: Fabric

Fabric, yards of it! See what we did there?

But, honestly, we aren’t talking little scraps. Estates & Consignments has a wide variety of full bolts - solids, stripes, and patterns. One thing is certain, they are top quality and will be a great match for sewing your next set of curtains or reupholstering those dining room chairs.

What to get: Something you can breathe new life into

Speaking of upholstery, maybe it’s time you grabbed a piece with a little history and gave it a glow-up.

Yes, Estates Revisited has pristine vintage pieces that don’t need any TLC but you might also find a slightly dingy sideboard or a tarnished bar cart that will be stunning once you are through. Best of all, when you can humble-brag on your talents when those compliments start rolling in.

1216 Main Street

What to get: Tools, glue, and other supplies

Hear us out - Bailey Spencer isn’t just for ordering a custom Chippendale door or sourcing the perfect antique clawfoot bathtub. Just take two steps past the register to find the fixings you need to practically any project.

Wood glue? Got it. Finishing nails? You betcha! Paint brushes? Take your pick. Plus, in a time when avoiding crowds is an olympic sport, popping into your local hardware store is the way to go.

What to get: An online painting class

Did someone say paint night? For months, the Academy Center of the Arts has been upping their education game and moving to online classes for artists of any level.

Do a solo session as you create a winter night sky, have a romantic Valentine’s Day as you paint a date-night birch tree scene with your partner, or bring the whole family in for some handprint penguin fun. The Academy will provide your supplies and you can even add on a bottle of wine!

What to get: Blacksmithing & Woodworking Classes

Workshops are back at Vector Space this month and we couldn’t be more thrilled! If you haven’t been to this shared makerspace yet, you are missing out. Most days, it is only accessible to members only (membership open for a limited time), so signing up for a workshop is a great way to see it in its glory while learning a new skill.

Coming up in January - try your hand at the wood lathe or CNC router, get introduced to blacksmithing, or carve you very own wooden spoon!

What to get: Inspiration

If we haven’t gotten your creative juices flowing by now, maybe it’s time you head down your own inspiration alley at Riverviews Artspace. Check out their new exhibits opening on January 8 for First Fridays or arrange a visit by appointment.

If leaving the house is scary (we get it - we’ve all gotten a bit into the “hermit” stage of the pandemic at one time or another), then cue up the Coffee with Curators podcast and enjoy it from the comfort of your couch.

So, there you have it. So many great ways to get crafty while supporting local businesses in Downtown Lynchburg.

Still not motivated? Just get a puzzle from Gilded and call it a day.

A Day Downtown with Walter Virgil

We recently asked downtown resident and community member, Walter Virgil, Jr. to take us along with him (figuratively) for a day in Downtown Lynchburg. This busy man never stops - breakfast and lunch, business calls and outdoor recreation, professional meetings and personal purchases - you might be surprised how much can be achieved in our city center.

Walter was armed with some Downtown Lynchburg Gift Cards, and with over 30 participating businesses, he had plenty of options on which locally-owned small businesses to support."

Note: Not every business he stopped at accepts the Downtown Lynchburg Gift Card…but we’re working on it. We’ll let you know who’s on the program by marking them** and you can check out the list of participating businesses by clicking here.

Check out his day ⇩⇩

IMG_6286.jpeg

Who is Walter Virgil, Jr?

I am commonly asked the question, “what is it that you do?” Well… I serve as:

  • CEO of Get Fresh and Live, a non-profit initiative pro-actively attacking mass incarnation rates through programming geared to cultivating healthy self perception within at risk young men

  • Owner of Walter Virgil and Associates LLC rendering consultation from community development, diversity equity inclusion education and crisis management while representing executive men’s fashion brands.

  • Community Liaison for Bishop S.Y. Younger, The Ramp Church International

  • Active Board member: Centra, Community Benefits Board, Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra Executive Board

I’m blessed to be invited to be a part of a number of projects and endeavors that grant me the opportunity to connect with some of the most amazing people in the City of Lynchburg.

I’m really excited about having you guys with me for the day. I’ll be taking you to some of my favorite places to eat, work and play. Special thanks to Downtown Lynchburg Association for sponsoring a fairly average day of activity with their Downtown Lynchburg Gift Card. Let’s get to it!

I had to start the day with a good home-cooked breakfast, and I couldn’t think of a better spot than Barb’s Dreamhut located in the Lynchburg Community Market. I LOVE Ms. Barb’s because the food is amazing and reminds me of my late Momo (grandmother) Matti Virgil’s cooking. The smells alone are nostalgic, but what seals the deal for me is when I get to the window and it’s her, "Ms. Barb," ready to take care of me. She has a way of making you feel like you’re one of her own. She doesn’t just take your order, but if you decide to eat-in within the market, she’ll bring it to your table insuring that you have all of the condiments and napkins you need. Sweet woman and delicious food cooked. No better way to start the day.

File_017.jpg

While I was waiting for my food I made my way over to Oshun Organics** (which is in the Market as well), and checked out Karrye’s all-natural products. It’s not hard to find her. Just take a deep breath and follow the beautiful aromatic scents of Lavender Sage, Turkish Rose and Orange Patchouli Vanilla. The scrub demo was great. The soaps, oils, and body butters where fantastic. Check them out when you get a chance. You can even buy online for free local pick-up.

Unfortunately, by the time I took my first few bites I received my initial thread of calls for the day and I had to box up my breakfast.

Prior to heading into Ms. Barb’s, I ran into Andy Young of Mass Mutual Wyndhurst and my fellow Lynchburg Regional Business Alliance Bro. He told me that there was a ribbon cutting going, so I decided to crash it! While leaving the Market I handed my box to my photographer for the day, Derrick Hairston and told him to meet me at the Dot Drives office on Jefferson street. I had to free up my hands because I’ve been obsessed with the Bird scooters downtown. I uploaded the app and hit the streets as fast as the scooter could take me (16mph). Lol.

File_019.jpg

I pulled up to the Dot Drives office (donor engagment software for non-profits) on Jefferson just to find out that it was in the same building as Bikes Unlimited. The moment I stepped into the door I was greeted by the man himself, Sal Ferlise.

File_012.jpg

Heath Barret from the Alliance had the scissors out; it was apparent that I made it just in time for the picture and the cut.

While there I saw a lot of my friends and met some new ones. I met Ben and the Knapsack crew, I learned how they’re making amazing Squarespace websites for companies both big and small all over the country from their office space right here in the Hill City. As I looked down at my watch, I realized that I had to get to my office to respond to some emails and prep for a zoom consultation.

While heading outside, I decided to jump back on my scooter and fly to my office at 801 Church Street.

While pulling up I had to admire the awesome work that Daryl & Johanna Calfee and their Penny Lane Properties crew did on the 801 Church location. The beginning of December, Evolving Solution Services made this beautiful place our new home. It’s SUPER cool that we’re now next door neighbors to one of our clients, the City of Lynchburg. We provide staffing services to both the Water Department and Public Works. We’re very proud of the many people we’ve been able to put to work at a living wage.

As I wrapped up my consultation, I got a call from my gorgeous fiancée, Kristal Knowles.

File_009.jpg

She was at the YWCA Church Street Bridal** finalizing her choice. I’m so happy her search is now over. Of course I don’t have a clue what this dress looks like, but I’m confident that Kristal picked something GREAT with the help of Rachel Cantu and the rest of her team. Kristal told me that Rachel was patient and such a joy to work with. We’re blessed to know that the proceeds of this dress will go into programming, resources and shelter to women who survived domestic violence through the YWCA of Central Virginia. Please learn more about this program and support.

By this time, we were ready for something to eat. We decided to meet up at The White Hart Cafe**, one of my favorite spots for coffee meetings in the city. The White Hart Cafe has become a legitimate watering hole. On any given day you can see people from all walks of life there. Anyone from City officials, professors, executives, college students and various members of our community that may be going through a tough time all having a cup of coffee together. The coffee is great and the food is exceptional as well. I’ve had everything on the menu and I can testify that you cannot go wrong. I promise I’m not saying this because one of the owners, " Vic Stanley," is my Good Brother. This was my spot before he bought it! Lol

File_008.jpg

I was excited about having lunch with Kristal especially because we had a special guest, DJ!!

File_005.jpg

DJ is Kristal’s brilliant 5 year old son and I get the honor of being his stepdad and teaching him what honorable manhood denotes and requires.

We enjoyed our lunch and decided to go to Percival’s Island. I thought, “if we’re going to Percival’s island we might as well rent some bikes.” While we had lunch I talked about how cool the Bird scooters were and immediately DJ told me that he wanted to try it. I promised him we’d ride one down to Bikes Unlimited.

Once we arrived to Bike’s Unlimited we were welcomed by Ben. Ben was super helpful. He guided us through the online registration and waiver for rental. It was very easy and before you knew it we had our bikes rolling.

The rain cut our bike ride short, so we decided to head back to our new home and take some couple photos with the great Derrick Hairston.

File_000.jpg

Special shootout to the Downtown Lynchburg Association for giving me this opportunity to share a little about myself, my family and a few of my favorite things to do downtown. Wishing everyone Happy Holidays.

Downtown Cyber Week Staff Picks

Downtown Cyber Week is here! We’ve rounded up some awesome online specials and sales from your favorite Downtown Lynchburg retailers. Plus, shopping Downtown Cyber Week allows you to:

  • Start your holiday shopping early - get it done and forget it

  • Avoid having to go out in public - you don’t even have to wear pants

  • Support locally owned businesses - Jeff Bezos already has enough money

So, to inspire your shopping spree, the staff at Downtown Lynchburg Association has selected some of their favorite picks at each store. (No, we don’t expect you to buy us stuff…but we might be conveniently tagging our families and friends.)

Spearman Artisanry

free shipping on all orders using code Cyber Week

Ashley: Handcrafted African Woven Bag - This bag is perfect for filling with market-fresh produce (or maybe a toddler’s favorite toys). Did we mention that it is a fair-trade product handwoven out of Veta Vera Grass in Ghana, West Africa?

Susan: Sterling Silver Wire Crocheted Circle Earrings - Talk about a wardrobe staple. These sterling silver earrings go with practically anything while the intricate handwoven process makes them stand in a league of their own.

Deidre: Mini Macrame Plant Hanger with Faux Plant - While Deidre DOES have the ability to keep a plant alive (unlike some of us who will remain nameless), it never hurts to spruce up a small space with something that doesn’t need light or water.

James: Men's Peruvian Camp Shirt - Menswear? Heck, yeah! James can wear this Peruvian camp shirt while hiking with friends or enjoying a delicious wheat beer.

Lexie & Lee

20% off entire website and free shipping over $75

Ashley: Stirrup Earrings - A couple of things that we’ve learned about Ashley over the years: she’s addicted to earrings and they need to stand out against her dark hair. These stirrup earrings, about the size of a quarter, do just that.

Susan: Essential V Neck - It’s no secret that Susan is a Michigander, so cold weather and layering is her JAM! Winter is coming and it’s time for layering. That’s why this thermal v-neck is a must to keep warm while squeezing that last bit of fall in Downtown Lynchburg.

Deidre: Moxie Aztec Cardigan - Deidre is living that cozy life! Whether she’s cuddled up by a backyard bonfire or checking in on the Takeout Patios, she’ll be nice and warm in this cardigan. Plus the black & tan Aztec design goes well with practically any outfit.

James: Lexie & Lee Gift Card - James is one smart cookie. Rather than guess what his fiancé’s size is, he’s just going to get her a gift card instead. That is, if he doesn’t spend it on some of the vintage homeware that the Lexie & Lee staff carefully curate first.

Gilded & live trendy or die

Saturday & Sunday Only: Online Holiday Open House - 15% off with code OPENHOUSE

Ashley: Pop Culture Stickers - Gimme all the stickers. Call it nostalgia for a childhood collection, but why wouldn’t you want to put the late, great RBG on your computer, Ashley’s leadership role model, Leslie Knope on your water bottle, and the goddess herself, Lizzo on your cell phone case?

Susan: “Home Is Where Your Dog Is” Pillow - With three furry friends in her household, this motto holds true for Susan. Sure, this pillow might get covered in dog hair, but it’s totally worth it for puppy cuddles on the couch.

Deidre: Third West Brand Perfume - This earthy blend of botanicals is not only easy-to-wear, but is hand-crafted here in the U.S. Gilded carries three gender-neutral blends including Old Bourbon and Gypsy Soul, but Deidre prefers the rich tone of Smoked Sandlewood.

James: Terra Candle Co. Island Tobacco - We are fairly certain that James works better with a little bit of candlelight (or so he claims). Regardless, we all agree that the Island Tobacco scent is masculine but the notes of teakwood and sandlewood make us all want to get to a beach.

oshun organics

25% off storewide on orders over $25

Ashley: Aja Loc & Curl Cream Gel - For those days where a blowdryer or straightening iron are just not in the cards, Ashley grabs her Aja Loc & Curl Cream. Not only does it define curls but it tames fly-aways, so she can focus on getting stuff done while still looking good.

Susan: Whipped Body Butter - One of many Oshun Organics products stocked in the Brown household, Body Butter is perfect for dry, chapped skin…you know, the kind you get after washing your hands often. Best of all, the Unicorn Essence scent takes her back to a time of My Little Ponies & Lisa Frank.

Deidre: New Moon Eye Gel-Cream - We should have known that this mystical spirit would gravitate to anything inspired by the moon. But we get it, Deidre spends plenty of late nights crafting jewelry and candles, and this eye gel is there to liven up tired eyes.

James: Warrior Conditioning Beard Butter - James is a dude. A dude with a beard. To keep that beard soft and conditioned, James chooses beard butter. With five scents to choose from (unscented is a scent, right?), you can choose a fragrance that is earthy and bright, sweet, soft and slightly floral, spicy, or none of the above.

Beeswax candle co.

20% OFF COLONNADE CANDLEs as listed on the “sales” section

Ashley: Square Beeswax Pillars - Classic square pillars are a MUST from Beeswax Candle Company’s signature line. Made with wax sourced from American beekeepers, these beauties add bold flair to your home.

Susan: Beeswax Gold-edge Feathered Twist - The longer you burn these feathered twists, the more the light flickers around the remaining wax fingers. The gold ridges add a sense of drama perfect for a romantic date night at home.

Deidre: Hand-Rolled Beeswax Tapers - Texture? Yes, please. Sheets of honeycomb wax are delicately rolled to create these tapers that can burn up to 8 hours!

James: 12 Hour Wander Collection Tins - Remember when we said that James loves candles? Well, with these travel tins, he can take his candles where ever he goes. We recommend getting all three for a full set.

Downtown Lynchburg

20% OFF cold-weather gear (hats, Sweatshirts, long-sleeve tees) with code fall2020

Ashley: Classic Downtown Lynchburg T-Shirt - There’s nothing like a good tee for those mornings where choices are hard, especially if you haven’t had your first cup of coffee yet. If you find that you have those types of mornings a lot, go ahead and order one in each color.

Susan: Downtown Lynchburg Cap - With hair that seems to change colors with the seasons, it’s surprising to find out that her go-to gear (aside from sneakers) is a Downtown Lynchburg cap to wear while running the trails.

Deidre: Crew Neck Sweatshirt - The bigger, the better. Deidre loves to cozy up in a sweatshirt that’s a few sizes too big. Paired with leggings and a warm mug of tea, she’s all set to tackle the day.

James: Special Edition T-Shirt - James did an absolutely fantastic job designing the logo for our telethon swag, so it’s no wonder that he’s repping downtown in this ringer tee all the time. Missed out? Keep an eye out for more limited-edition donor merch coming soon!

Take Your Own Oktoberfest Tour

Germany canceling Oktoberfest had us shook. After all, the festival originated on October 12, 1810. We’ll say that again EIGHTEEN-TEN. And if a 200 year-old festival is taking a year off, then I guess that we can’t complain.

But, if 2020 has taught us nothing else, it’s how to pivot…and pivot we shall! Rather than lamenting over the lack of beer festivals, let’s lace up those boots and take a trek to the many great Downtown Lynchburg breweries and restaurants serving up seasonal selections. We followed a group of friends around downtown as they took part in our Downtown Lynchburg Oktoberfest walking tour. Now it’s your turn!

Whether you complete it in one fell-swoop (like we did - it CAN be done) or spread it out over all thirty-one days in October, these businesses will be happy to have you!

Start the journey in any order you like.

WHAT TO DRINK: DRIFTER’S APPLE ALE (APPLE GRAF)

Sweet with a complex side. No, we are not talking about our last significant other. Described to be “as close to cider as a beer can get”, Drifters Apple Ale is a half and half blend of unfermented beer and unfiltered apple cider fermented together. Come to think about it, if that relationship had been this well balanced, we might still be together.

WHAT TO DRINK: STARR HILL LAST LEAF (BROWN ALE)

You had me at “real Virginia maple syrup”. While some people go pumpkin-spice crazy this time of year, there’s no denying this delicious blend of nutty goodness layered with notes of maple and vanilla. Well rounded with a beautiful mahogany color, each sip of this English ale will make you want to close your eyes and and imagine crunching through the fallen leaves.

Don’t discount this Boston classic. The folks at Sam Adams know how to make a märzen that is meant to fill your stein. Smooth with a roasty sweetness and light hop character, this one pair well with pretzels and college football. So go ahead and order a salted caramel brownie topped with vanilla ice cream rolled in crushed pretzels while you are at it. You won’t regret it!

WHAT TO DRINK: ANYTHING FROM THEIR ROTATING TAPS

It’s tough to peg down just one brew when you have 40 taps from which to choose. However, we hear that you can look forward to beers like München On Hops, a Bavarian IPA collaboration between Devil’s Backbone and Spaten (the granddaddy of all Oktoberfest breweries) and Starr Hill’s Festie. Whichever tickles your fancy, we recommend stopping in often to try something new - or ordering a crowler to-go! Click here to see the draft list.

WHAT TO DRINK: BLUE MOUNTAIN BREWERY 13.FIVE OKTOBERFEST

Blue Mountain Brewery isn’t joking around in the creation of this “festbier.” Not only do they use Munich, Vienna, and German pilsner malt and hop it exclusively with Hallertau variety hops, they ensure that it meets the Stammürze Law - stating that a beer must have an original gravity of 13.5° plato to be served at Oktoberfest in Munich. Daaaaang. But don’t worry, you don’t have to be as intense to drink it as Blue Mountain is to brew it. Prost!

In the spirit of social distancing, the good people at Paulaner have put together everything you need to celebrate this season-of-beer at home! Be sure to grab an Ace Pumpkin Cider, Buffalo Bills Black Pumpkin Oatmeal Stout, Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Pumpkin Ale, and a Brooklyn Post Road Pumpkin Ale. That leaves TWO spots for whatever else you fancy. Plus, if you are feeling especially anti-social, you could even purchase online for curbside pickup.

10 Simple Ways to Support Small

We know you’ve heard it before. Shop Small. Support Local. But such a broad concept can be a lot to wrap your mind around. So rather than leaving you out there to figure out exactly what it means, we’ve gathered a list of practical things you can do to support your friendly local business owners right now.

POST A PHOTO OF YOUR PURCHASE

“I didn’t know that you could get THAT in Downtown Lynchburg!” We hear it all of the time. So, don’t be shy…it’s time to tell all of your friends about that great new outfit you got or the weekend brunch special that was SO DELICIOUS. You aren’t showing off, you are spreading the word. But, if food photos and selfies aren’t your thing, remember that you can always hit that little paper-airplane button and share that businesses’ instagram post to your stories.

TAKE A STAY-CATION

Leave those dirty dishes in the sink and escape. That’s right. We said it. Staring at the same four walls each day (especially if you are teleworking) can be a bummer. As luck would have it, there are some fantastic hotels in Downtown Lynchburg who have upped their game on safety standards and are ready to help you take that load off! So, grab your toothbrush and prepare for your next escape - even if it’s just down the road.

BUY A GIFT CARD

Are you the type of person who raids the gift card rack for birthdays, baby showers, Chanukah, Christmas, and everything in between? You can admit it. There’s no judgement here. BUT, you might hurt our feelings if you pass by this opportunity to stock up on Downtown Lynchburg Gift Cards. They can be used at over 30 participating businesses in Downtown Lynchburg and you can buy them online. Easy-peasy.

ATTEND AN EVENT - ONLINE OR OTHERWISE

Yep. We miss socializing. Desperately. Seeing people we know, some we don’t, and bumping into someone you haven’t seen in ages. Events are starting to come back to downtown (distanced indoor and outdoor), and even if you aren’t comfortable being face to face, there are plenty of online events still being hosted by entertainment and attraction venues. Check out our new and improved events calendar to see them all in one place. Search by venue, category, you name it!

GET TAKEOUT (AND LEAVE A GENEROUS TIP)

This one's a no-brainer. Takeout is the easy solution for dinner. And now, with even more online ordering and delivery options, it’s easier than ever to get what you want. But, don’t forget that wait staff need love, too - with social distancing, they are only able to provide their exceptional service to a fraction of the tables they used to. So, even if you are picking up your meal curbside, go ahead a leave them a great tip. After all, you didn’t even have to get out of your car.

Visit our DINE Directory to choose your next meal!

TAKE A CLASS

Is it time to take off that Quarantine-15? The YMCA is ready to welcome you back. They even have a capacity checker so that you can plan the best possible time for your visit!

Perhaps you’ve completed ALL OF THE PUZZLES and need a new skill. The Academy Center of the Arts is offering classes (in-person or online) with everything from drawing to smartphone photography. Want to work at your own pace? Become a member of the SPARKS Lab at Riverviews or Vector Space. Maybe you just can’t think of any more kids crafts. Check out a kit from Amazement Square’s STEAM Lending Program or visit in-person to join in on weekly Art Expeditions or The Hive Open Makerspace.

Come to think about it - you might be booked solid for the next three months. You’re welcome.

DONATE TO A LOCAL NONPROFIT

There are so many wonderful non-profits with a diverse set of missions that call Downtown Lynchburg their home and we couldn’t be more proud to have them in our community. Many survive on the generosity of others to continue their service. However, in today’s COVID world, traditional fundraising methods like galas and live auctions are just not going to cut it. So, here’s your call to action: take some time to make a donation, no matter how large or small.

And, if you absolutely can’t decide, you can always find one of the brand new caring meters to empty your spare change. Funds collected in these bright green beauties will be distributed to various organizations via the Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation.

SHOP FOR LOCALLY GROWN GROCERIES

It’s worth the effort to buy produce grown in Virginia. It just tastes better. See for yourself by making a trip to the Lynchburg Community Market a part of your Saturday morning routine. While you are there, you can pick up some hard-to-find filipino groceries at Philippine Delight, grab a bag of freshly roasted coffee at Grains of Sense, and maybe even splurge on a dozen doughnuts from Father’s Cafe & Bakery. It’s called multitasking.

SUPPORT A LOCAL ARTIST

Downtown Lynchburg wasn’t named the James River Arts & Culture District on a whim. Not only are there plenty of retail shops that carry one-of-a-kind products crafted here in Lynchburg, but you can connect to masterpieces at galleries like Riverviews Artspace, the Academy Center of the Arts, and even exhibitions at The Virginian. Make an evening of it by attending First Fridays every month and take add something to your collection.

WRITE A GLOWING REVIEW

Have you ever filtered a list by ratings? Yeah, it can really help narrow down a decision. It costs you nothing other than your time to write a positive review of a Downtown business and, trust us, these owners will be SO grateful. Not only will you be helping attract visitors to their business, but you will be giving them a few uplifting words to make them smile. That in itself is priceless (cheesy, but true).

And there you have it. Go ahead, be that Local Champion. You have our permission.
