Cinn City has a special treat in store this fall and it’s called The Lumberjack. A warm and gooey cinnamon roll topped with maple frosting, cinnamon apples, cinnamon drizzle, and bacon- WOW! If your sweet tooth is asking for a little more, try swapping the bacon for pecans and the changing the drizzle to caramel. Trust us- either way you get it, it’s simply delicious. You’ll want to go back for seconds!

(Pumpkin) Spice It Up!

Blackline-4.jpg

Lynchburg is somewhat of a Coffee Central to many locals. With what feels like a new shop on each block, it can be overwhelming to discover what’s in the area.  We made your job easier by taking it upon ourselves to visit each coffee shop downtown and try their fall menu items (Such a burden, we know. You’re so welcome for taking one for the team). We found our favorites, and now we want to share them with you! Find all the details of our downtown coffee tour here!

Who Run the World?

Tulip_2.jpg

GIRLS! Beyoncé knows what’s up, and so does The Hip Tulip! This adorable flower shop sells all the florals you could need, as well as candles, cards, and other local goods. Not only is the shop a great (and new!) edition to downtown, but they are also partnering with Lynchburg Ladies to host a female-focused event on Friday, November 8th at 6:30 pm. Expect coffee, desserts, floral arrangements, and vendors from other women-owned businesses. Grab your best friend, your mom, or another #LadyBoss and get your tickets now!

Thanks for exploring all of the downtown adventures Lynchburg has to offer this season. Find other events on our Calendar and keep an eye out for a very SPOOKY blog coming soon!

PSL Journey Through Downtown

Lynchburg is home to dozens of coffee shops, and some of the very best are right here in downtown! Which is great news because the season of the PSL (Pumpkin Spice Latte) – is upon us!

But who’s got the best spiced beverages?

Fear not - we’re here to help. We made it our mission to scour the menus for the warmest and tastiest fall drinks to create an all-access guide to the autumn downtown coffee scene – including drink, treats, and a few extras along the way!

White-Hart-3.jpg

1. The White Hart

1208 Main Street
Mon 7am-5pm, Tues-Sat 7am-8pm, Sun 8am-5pm

This is a fun one. At The White Hart this fall you can enjoy classics like a PSL, salted caramel latte, or a chai latte. If you prefer something a little more unique, you can also go for limited edition drinks like the peach cobbler chai tea, which is just the perfect transition from summer to fall. Any of these delicious drinks would pair nicely with the apple ginger scone.

Want to create your own fall concoction? Go for it! With a variety of flavors and milk, you can customize any latte to make it taste like whatever fall means to you.

Stop by to try one of the fall specialty drinks, like the honey-nut macchiato, salted caramel matcha with Himalayan salt, and apple chai latte. If you prefer more traditional options you can opt for the PSL, pumpkin pie latte, or a flavored hot chocolate. Their menu also includes gluten-free baked goods, including three variations of a streusel coffee cake and a vegan pumpkin molasses muffin! Basically, order one of everything.

Marigold-1.jpg

Whichever way you take your drink, make sure you order it ‘for here’ so you can enjoy it in gorgeous surroundings.

Mission-4.jpg

5. Mission House Coffee

722 Commerce Street
M-F 7am-7pm, Sat 8am-7pm, Sun 9am-7pm

Option, options, options! Mission House Coffee knows how to serve a solid brew. This year, the fall menu is inspired by the local colleges and universities, with a different flavor for each school. How creative!

Something we love about this business is that every month they give back to a local organization. So when you head over for your new favorite fall drink, be sure to round up your total when they ask. All that extra change will go towards causes in your own community. We can get on board with that!

6. 5th street grind

710 Fifth Street
M-Sat 7am-5pm, Sun 8am-4pm

5th Street Grind has quite the extensive fall specials menu! Their list includes everything from delicious classics like pumpkin brûlée to more interesting flavors like their caramel apple-inspired latte. The zing of green apple flavor gives this drink a out-of-the-ordinary flavor palette, and as the barista described it: “You can’t stop drinking it, but you can’t figure out why!”

Head over to this quaint 5th Street coffee shop for a fresh brew, a look at fantastic local art, and a great music playlist in the background.

7. The loving co

As the newest shop on the list, The Loving Co brings a whole lot to the table in Downtown Lynchburg. Downtown Living

Won’t You Be Our Neighbor?

More and more residential living opportunities continue to pop up in Downtown Lynchburg, and we are stoked to be able to offer so many different options. Although downtown living has been a big thing for a couple years now, there are some new properties that you may not be aware of. We’ve put together a list of the best up-and-coming places, so you can find the set-up that’s ideal for you—whether you love the historic character of a 100-year-old building or the ease of a brand new condo – there’s something that is just right for you.

If you love living close to fabulous restaurants, bars, and attractions isn’t enough to convince you to take up the downtown living lifestyle, we’ve got another reason. It’s good for you! A recent article from City Lab notes that “living near community-oriented public and commercial spaces brings a host of social benefits such as increased trust, decreased loneliness, and stronger sense of attachment to where we live.” So, from new construction to historic renovations, and in almost every configuration you can imagine—lofts, condos, townhomes, luxury suites—keep reading to discover your future “home sweet home.”

Name: The Krise

Location: West corner of 9th and Main Streets
Rent or Buy: Rent

One of Main Street’s most iconic corners is the site of a highly-anticipated renovation. Lynchburg’s first “high rise” built in 1905, the Krise Building will soon house 21 units on floors two through seven with a commercial space on the main level. The prominent location will provide unparalleled views of Monument Terrace and the intersection of 9th and Main. Plus, with 10 ft. ceilings, original, interior archways and plenty of natural light (some units boast floor-to-ceiling windows), this project promises a high-end, cosmopolitan experience. Bonus: Parking options are available! Look for these to be available for rent by the end of 2019.

Final color front.jpg

Name: Parkview on the Bluff

Location: Entrances along the Bluffwalk and Commerce
Rent or Buy: Buy

Steps from El Jefe, My Dog Duke’s Diner and much more, these 19 luxury condominiums are currently for sale—though you better hurry, several have already been claimed! This new construction offers one-bedroom options on the lower level (which opens directly onto the Bluffwalk) and two-bedroom layouts on floors two through six (which have a main entrance on Commerce). The upper units also include balconies overlooking the Bluffwalk. Another great perk in this building is the dedicated, private rooftop space reserved for owners plus plans for a public, rooftop wine bar. Units are currently for sale while construction is ongoing.

IMG_6949.jpg

Name: 801 Church

Location:  801 Church Street
Rent or Buy: Rent

Want all the historic charm? Your search is complete. Another renovation from local developers at Penny Lane, this circa-1877 building has been reconfigured to now host a commercial space on the main level with eight lofts in the floors above. Plans for these one and two bedroom lofts will highlight the original, exposed brick and the floor-to-ceiling windows; they will also have parking behind the building allowing for safety and privacy. With The Virginian Hotel right across the street (and their in-house coffee shop and rooftop restaurant), the convenience and accessibility of this location are easy to see. Look for these lofts available for rent summer 2019!

500 Court front rendering.jpg

Name: 500 Court Street

Location: 500 Court Street
Rent or Buy: Buy

The only downtown project to offer brand new townhomes, the plans for this location are even better because every unit will include dedicated parking for not one but two cars! Designed by the team at Atelier 11, these three-story buildings will include 13 townhomes total, each featuring three bedrooms and two and a half baths. This development will offer unbeatable views of the Blue Ridge Mountains from each unit’s private balcony. Plans also include hardwood floors on the main levels, granite countertops and tiled showers in the master en suites. Look for these to go on sale in 2020. Contact Consensus Real Estate for more information.

Screen Shot 2019-05-31 at 12.00.38 PM.png

Name: The Estates on Commerce

Location: Entrances on 12th (139) and 13th (107) streets
Rent or Buy: Buy

Those with a taste for the finer things in life will appreciate the luxury of these European-inspired condominiums. These spaces are being built out and designed by the ever-elegant Interiors by Moyanne design firm, and under Moyanne Harding’s experienced guidance, these 21, single-level units will combine high-end finishes—think marble and moldings!—with neutral, soothing colors for a timeless result. Built in 1899, the original Booker’s Warehouse has soaring ceilings and numerous sky lights, meaning plenty of natural light throughout. Each condo will also have private, covered parking; to say they thought of everything is putting it mildly. Buyers can purchase now, and plans are to start construction in mid-2019.

IMG_6942.jpg

Name: Lofts on Church

Location: 1100 Church Street; corner of Church & 11th
Rent or Buy: Rent

Downtown’s newest Pocket Park sits right across the street from this historic building, whose windows provide a great view of the newly installed bright seating and garden area. Located a block from Main Street and right next to local shops and eateries (i.e. Urbavore and Crisp), the former Clark Building was renovated throughout 2018 to now house 15 one-bedroom rental units. Exposed brick, high ceilings, and an abundance of natural light are the main draws here; the rich, navy blue cabinetry and copper lighting fixtures are the finishing touches. A shared outdoor common area is an added bonus for second and third floor units where you can find great views of Church and Main streets.

Lynchburg Living Restaurant Week

The most wonderful time of the year is almost here! No, we’re not talking about summer (although we do love that too). We’re talking about the 8th Annual Lynchburg Living Restaurant Week! With eateries like Tahini’s and Depot Grille participating, who wouldn’t be excited?

Downtown Donuts: A Tasty Tour

Glazed or filled? Round or…square?

Yes, in the world of donuts, options abound. And in Downtown Lynchburg, there’s no need to choose because you can find it all right here—some donuts even come with choose-your-own toppings, dips and frostings!

So, here’s our complete roundup for all of downtown’s circular confections. Pick up a box (or three!), grab a seat on the Bluffwalk, and be prepared for some serious noms.

1. Mrs. Joy’s Absolutely Fabulous Treats

Artistic cookie creations may have put her on the map, but the owner of Mrs. Joy’s has got serious donut skills as well and an understandably dedicated following. You can expect melt-in-your-mouth squares of deliciousness—yes, square! And we dare you to try and choose between classic glazed, maple glazed, or homemade toppings. For the serious donut enthusiast, she loads up her Boston cream option with French pastry cream and tops it with more than a generous amount of rich ganache. Next level, y’all.

2. Urbavore

Yup. Vegan donuts have arrived on Church Street: PETA-friendly and 100% enjoyment! Urbavore, a plant-based eatery is serving up a variety of equally gorgeous and delectable vegan yeast donuts. You even have ample choices from classic glaze to chocolate and from butterscotch to maple glazed with toasted pecans for an added crunch. If you’re ready for  some pops of colorful flavor, try the bright raspberry glaze

fathers.jpg

3. Father’s Bakery at Lynchburg Community Market

Coming soon to the Lynchburg Community Market, Father’s Bakery (formerly Father’s Table) will open with all sorts of goodies. We hear that there will be bread, bagels, and, of course, donuts! Stay tuned for updates.

cinn+city.jpg

4. Cinn City

If you haven’t tried downtown’s fresh beignets and cinnamon buns, you are missing some goodness. They’re not donuts, technically, but when scratch-made, sugar-fried dough is involved, we are here for it. With a heavy dusting of powdered sugar, Cinn City won’t disappoint. Make sure you grab some cinnamon buns while you’re there and have fun choosing among the dozens of toppings, frostings, and drizzles. Pick up some milk or a handcrafted latte to round out this foodie experience!

5. Mama Crockett’s

On the outskirts of downtown on historic 5th Street you’ll find your stop for fresh apple cider donuts; they are highly addictive—you’ve been warned! Topped with cinnamon maple sugar, Mama Crockett’s sweets have a slight crisp on the outside and a subtle apple flavor in every bite (that’s thanks to the local pressed cider they add to the batter just before frying). We recommend ordering the “truck dozie” for a box of 12 classics, but since this operation has expanded from a truck into their newly opened storefront, they’re also offering bonus coatings, like Caramel Crunch, Chocolate Toffy, Lemon Crunch, and donut dip options, like Salted Caramel or Raspberry, on a regular rotation.

So, take a stroll…it’s just over a mile to hit all six of these delicious destinations.

#HeyMillennials: 8 reasons to move to Downtown Lynchburg

Screen Shot 2019-04-10 at 1.38.27 PM.png

Have you heard the news? Reviews.org has named Lynchburg the number one place for Millennials to move in 2019! I think all of us here already assumed that Lynchburg was the best place to live, but it’s nice to have some proof ;)

This article was quick to mention that Lynchburg has great trails, a Symphony Orchestra, and the Academy Center of the Arts- all of which are found Downtown. So really, if you're looking to move to Lynchburg, you should look to Downtown Lynchburg!

But if you still don’t believe me, here’s 8 more reasons why you this is the place for you:

1. Get There Quick

Downtown is filled with trendy lofts and apartments. Midpoint Apartments is right on the Bluffwalk, where you can enjoy a Sunday stroll with your pup, try a new restaurant, or explore new hobbies. Parkview on the Bluff is also coming soon and will feature luxury condos and upscale retail locations. With other apartments like these just minutes from major attractions, restaurants, and retail spaces, you’ll experience the fullness of downtown and be anywhere in just 15 minutes or less.

2. Music

WOW, Lynchburg has a thriving music scene, and venues like The Glass House and City Auditorium help make that possible! The Glass House is an urban multi-purpose space on Jefferson Street, and they have just lined up concerts through August with the help of City Auditorium, which is working to improve Lynchburg concerts in a big way-- like getting Steve Miller Band and Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals for some local shows. Kind of a big deal. Also, visit Speakertree, Lynchburg’s only record shop, and snag a record or two from their expansive new & used vinyl selection and check out their schedule for local shows in their laid back space.

3. Cultural Hub

Reviews.org made sure to mention that Lynchburg is culturally savvy, citing our theaters and orchestra, but we still have so much more. Spend a day touring the Lynchburg Museum, seeing the memorials (and city views) at Monument Terrace, or checking out First Fridays. It’s a night filled with art galleries, musical performances, museum exhibits, and more scattered across Downtown, and it’s always held on the first Friday of the month. This is also a great time to start looking for shows at the Renaissance Theater, Academy Center of the Arts, or the Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra!

4. #Foodie

Lynchburg is known for, if nothing else, having great food. You can find almost any kind of food here, and on almost any budget. Benny Scarpetta’s serves giant slices of pizza for the wild & free (& on a budget). Cinn City, a top-notch cinnamon roll cafe, and Mrs. Joy’s Absolutely Fabulous Treats are perfect for anyone with a sweet tooth. Crisp and Urbavore are delicious options for more plant-based and health-conscious options. Step things up a bit and head to El Jefe for tacos and tequila, Bootleggers for gourmet burgers, fries, and shakes, or check out Waterstone Pizza for some award winning pies! If you’re celebrating something really special then you’ll want to test out Shoemakers American Grille, a local favorite!

5. It’s 5 o’clock somewhere!

Lynchburg happily welcomed The Virginian Hotel’s Skyline Grill last year, which is the only rooftop bar in the city. It has a stunning view of the city and the James River. Enjoy comfortable seating, delicious foods, and an assortment of wines, beers, and cocktails.

The newest addition to the bar scene is Third Street Brewing, coming soon to the old Babcocks Auto Service building on Court Street. They have one location thriving in Farmville, but this will be their first Lynchburg branch. Renovations on their building start this summer, and once they’re finished the brewery will have 4 signature beers, along with several other seasonal brews. Local food trucks will arrive on site to sell food and Third Street will set up picnic tables for outdoor seating. We can’t wait for them to join our downtown family!

Screen+Shot+2019-04-10+at+11.58.44+AM.jpg

6. For the kiddos, too

Downtown isn’t just for adults! Your little ones can have fun (and learn a little) at Amazement Square, an interactive children’s museum. Afterward, you can treat them to rolled ice cream or a milkshake at MayLynn’s Creamery Downtown, or let them burn some energy walking the nature trails, speaking of which...

Screen Shot 2019-04-10 at 2.09.34 PM.png

7. Get Outside

...Let me tell you about them! Even in the hustle-and-bustle of downtown living, you can enjoy nature’s serenity in your own backyard. Percival’s Isle is right off of Jefferson Street and has a great view of the James River. You can picnic near the water, bike the trails, or stroll down the pavement. You can also follow the Riverwalk Trail or Blackwater Creek Trail. Each path is different from the last, so try and walk them all!

Another outdoor spot we adore downtown is the Bluffwalk, featuring our NEW CHAIRS! Aren’t they amazing?! We’re just a little (*really really*) excited to have these colorful additions in our area. Sit down and take a break, then explore all the Bluffwalk has from end to end. If you post any pictures while you’re here be sure to tag us @DowntownLynchburg so that we can share your pictures!

Screen+Shot+2019-04-10+at+12.22.42+PM.jpg

8. Finding your place

Downtown also features more personal groups that revolve around faith and beliefs, and we love it! We believe that everyone should be represented, and many faiths are expressed here through Holy Cross Catholic Church, First Baptist Church, and First Unitarian Church of Lynchburg. If church isn’t your thing, or maybe if it is, you can also check out the Lynchburg Diversity Center, which works to promote LGBTQ+ rights and strengthens this community in our city.

Well, there ya have it. Downtown Lynchburg is a pretty stellar place to live, work, and play. From culture to housing to food, the city has everything in a quaint urban hub. So thanks Reviews.org for the shout out in your Top 10 list! With a list like this, who wouldn’t want to live in Lynchburg?

Fifth Street Utility Replacement and Streetscape

IMG_1717_preview.jpg
fifth-street-blur-1.jpeg
5th-St-closures-01.png

Starting this April of 2018, Fifth Street will be undergoing the final phase of the recent utility replacement and streetscape project.

We know, we know. More construction is not what anyone wants. We are with you! But at the end of these construction efforts, we are left with more beautiful streets and sidewalks, and stronger infrastructure that will serve our community for years to come.

Over the past few years, you can see how previous streetscaping efforts have attracted new businesses to the area. You can now get a fantastic cup of coffee, have some BBQ, and enjoy locally-sourced seasonal cuisine – all on Fifth Street.

The next phase of the Fifth Street revitalization project will take place between Jackson and Taylor Streets and along Park Avenue between 5th and 6th Streets. Not only is roadway and sidewalks getting a facelift, but public utilities are going to be improved so that they can keep up with the rapidly growing and developing area.

The Federal Street traffic circle and other utility and streetscape work between Federal Street and Main Street have been completed and create a welcoming environment for new businesses choosing to call Fifth Street home!

IMG_1704.jpg

During this project, access to Fifth Street will be limited to all vehicular traffic, but don't let that stop you from making your way downtown! Truck traffic can detour downtown via 12th Street or the Lynchburg Expressway, all other traffic can access downtown through 8th street or 12th street!

Getting to your favorite Fifth Street finds won't be hard either! All side streets will be open for pedestrian traffic as well as cars. There is no need to worry as your morning cup of coffee from Fifth Street Grind, or weekend dinner plans at Grey's or Fifth and Federal Station won't be affected by the beautification and revitalization of Fifth Street.

As we always say....progress is messy! But worth it in the end. Help support these fantastic Fifth Street businesses by visiting them during construction. We'll see you there!

Heather Zippel Joins the DLA Staff

Heather-Circle.png

We are so please to welcome a new member of the DLA team.

Meet Heather Zippel, our new Development Coordinator. Heather's part-time role will focus primarily on fundraising, but she will also be involved in partner and business outreach efforts. Heather's past experience has provided her with a strong understanding of the challenges facing today’s brick-and-mortar businesses as she previously owned various retail storefronts in different parts of Lynchburg and ran her own interior design business. Heather has also volunteered with many area non-profits, and she is excited to bring her talents to an organization that is dedicated to growing the downtown district.

When asked why Heather wanted to work with DLA, she noted the potential impact she could make here. “DLA is well poised to have a measurable impact on Downtown’s continued revitalization. With solid executive and board leadership and strong community support, the organization can show significant return on the community’s investment in us. Downtown has so much potential and so many citizens who are active and want to make sure that Lynchburg is well-equipped for the next 10 to 15 years.”

So why hire someone to focus on fundraising? Downtown Lynchburg Association is a non-profit organization, which means that every single dollar that we spend on projects and programs must be raised through individual and business giving, grants, and program revenue. As we work to make an even larger impact on the continued success of downtown, we need the community behind us. That's where Heather comes in.

We are so excited for the future for DLA and of the organization. Read more about our 2018 Projects and Programs here.

Welcome Heather!

Downtown Utility & Streetscape Project Phase II

jes-headshot.jpg

Even though 2018 is just a few days old, the City is already preparing for 2019 and Phase II of the Downtown Utility & Streetscape Project. Construction won’t start until Summer or Fall of 2019, but we want to let you know what to expect with this next phase of construction in downtown.

Today, we have invited Jes Gearing from the City of Lynchburg Department of Water Resources for a brief Q&A about the next phase of construction in downtown.

What Is the Downtown Utility & Streetscape Project?

Downtown-Opening-Image.jpg

In 2015, the City of Lynchburg began its extensive fifty block Downtown Utility and Streetscape Project.  Our water system is old—so old, in fact, that some of our active water pipes date back to 1829.  With the downtown area growing, we decided that it was important to update our water infrastructure to meet current and future demands.

While improving the underground infrastructure, we will also update the streetscaping above ground to enhance our vibrant downtown’s curb appeal.  After installing the new water pipes, we are replacing curbs, gutters, sidewalks, adding traffic calming devices, planting new trees and shrubs, installing additional benches and trash cans, and installing new lighting.

Phase I of this project was completed in Fall of 2017 and included Church Street and Main Street between Fifth and Eighth Street.

Where Will Phase II Be Located?

Phase II of this project will be on Commerce Street between Fifth Street and Ninth Street.  It will also include Seventh Street and Eighth Street between Commerce Street and Main Street.

Phase-II-Map.png

Why Did the City Pick This Area for Phase II?

We considered several factors when deciding Phase II’s project area:

– First, there are a significant number of water main breaks in this area which have resulted in damage to public and private property, as well as in water service disruption.  The sooner we can replace the pipes with the greatest number of problems, the better.

– Next, moving in a linear fashion from Fifth Street towards Twelfth Street in order to improve water flow and pressure, using Phase II to connect to the completed Phase I pipes makes good sense.  In Fall 2017, we began to meet with businesses in the Phase II area to discuss their needs and concerns regarding the project.  With their understanding and cooperation, we are able to plan this project more than a year-and-a-half out.

– Finally, as with most things, the location and size of our next project area largely depended on budget.  With Phase II, we were limited to a five block area and this one was the most logical to complete next.

What Will the Area Look Like When It’s Completed?

Here are some photos from Phase I of the project. As you can see, the new streetscape design includes wider sidewalks, more green spaces, beautiful street lamps and some bricked crosswalks.

How Long Will This Project Take?

The project is estimated to last 12-14 months.  We will break ground after completion of both the Main Street Bridge Replacement Project (http://www.lynchburgva.gov/main-street-bridge-replacement) and the Fifth Street Corridor Utility & Streetscape Project (http://www.lynchburgva.gov/fifthstreet), near the end of Summer 2019.

So What Is Happening Right Now?

This project is currently in the design phase.  Since we won’t start construction for another year and a half, we will use this time to continue working with downtown businesses in the Phase II area in order to inform them of the process, answer questions, and gather input on the streetscape design.

Have Questions?

We will update the project website (http://www.lynchburgva.gov/downtownphase2) as soon as more information is available.  If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me at any point at the Department of Water Resources at jes.gearing@lynchburgva.gov.

Thanks to Jes for her updates and answers!
